All educational institutions within the state of Karnataka offering Engineering or Technology programmes must seek affiliation with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, unless they possess the necessary consent from VTU and the state government.

Seats at VTU are allocated by KEA, based on the scores of the accepted exams. However, the university promotes inclusivity of students belonging to the minority categories of Karnataka.
