My decision of choosing Fine Arts has been rewarding: Kamaldeep Singh

"I have often been rebuked by my parents for making my decisions in haste. But when they see my art work, they are happy to see that I joined Fine Arts rather than any other course," says Kamaldeep Singh. Read more at Shiksha.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”. The above saying by famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso highlights quite a common phenomenon of human life according to which we often have big dreams when we are children, but as we grow up, we compromise on those dreams and they are molded into something else.

In a country where a boy is destined to be an engineer and a girl to be a doctor, I tried to break through the shackles of the society by dreaming of becoming a notable painter of my generation. I come from a middle class family from Ambala Cantt. With this dream of becoming a painter, I decided to join the undergraduate course in Fine Arts at Lovely Professional University.

Now in my second year, I look back and realise how much my skills have honed. What I loved the most about entering college was the freedom that allowed my creativity to spread its wings. Seeking to explore my talents further, I participated in several competitions and art exhibitions like Falgun Art Exhibition and, Creative Contour. I was also a member of the group selected for Kala Sangam Art Competition organised by Karnal Municipal Corporation.

Realising how much further I have to improve, I try my best to work hard each day. I usually get up at 5.30 in the morning for my sketching practice. My juniors ask me for advice when they see me working on my sketches in the university corridors or classrooms and I really love helping them. With the freedom to create, and exposure to the huge world of art, I have learnt this much that now I take professional portrait assignments from people in and around the University.

Besides exploring my talent in art, I have become socially more responsible.

My friends and I joined Alumni Relations club of LPU, and have been a part of various social campaigns like blood donation camps, old clothes donation for the underprivileged and many more. I have often been rebuked by my parents for making my decisions in haste. But when they see my art work, they are happy to see that I joined Fine Arts rather than any other course. Moreover, I have formed a new family here with people from different states like Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh as well as various countries. One of my hostel roommates is from Nepal, which not only gave me the opportunity to know about their culture, but also gave me a brother from across the border. If today I am happy and successful, my college is one of the major factors behind it. I hope in the coming future I can make my country, parents and institution proud.

With a 9.82 CGPA and a 78.55 percentile in JEE Main, I'd say you have a decent chance of getting into several good private universities. If I were in your place, I'd look at options like LPU, VIT, SRM, KIIT, UPES, and Bennett University. All of these have good engineering programs, though the admiss
