Some of the historical facts of IIT KGP are listed below:
- Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur’s history dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Sir Jogendra Singh (Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council) to look after the creation of new higher technical institutions for post-World War II development of the country.
- After this, a 22-member committee was formed, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, which proposed the establishment of major institutions in the four quarters of India, along the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
- The report also suggested that the institutes should be established as early as possible with the ones in the East and West of India to be started immediately.
- After the recommendations of the committee, the first Indian Institute of Technology was established in Esplanade East, Calcutta as the Eastern Higher Technical Institute in May 1950.
- In September 1950, it shifted to its permanent campus at Hilji, Kharagpur. The institute changed its name to the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) on August 18, 1951, before its official inauguration.
- Hilji was used as a detention camp during British rule, making IIT KGP probably the only institute in the world that started its journey in a prison house.
- IIT KGP is the fourth oldest technical institute in West Bengal.
- IIT Kharagpur University which started its journey with over 224 students and 42 teachers, has now become one of the best Engineering institutes of the country.

If you get a good score in the JEE Main, you would then have to pass the exam of JEE Advanced for admission into IIT Kharagpur. It is through the JoSAA counseling process that admission is granted based on the rank obtained in the JEE Advanced. For MBA or M.Tech or any other postgraduate degrees, you would have to qualify for tests like GATE or CAT.
Candidates willing to get admission to the IIT Khargapur must first register for the entrance exams. Then appear for the entrance exams. Then take part in the counselling round. Pay the admission fee at the selected and the allotted college. This is how a student can apply for various courses offered at IIT Kharagpur.
For admission to MBA at VGSOM (IIT Kharagpur), candidates need to qualify CAT followed by group discussion and personal interview round. The minimum CAT percentile required is 90 for general category students. For NC-OBC and SC/ ST/ PwD the minimum CAT percentile required is 80 and 75 respectively.
To be eligible for admission to MBA at VGSOM, candidates must have the following:
- A bachelor’s degree of minimum 4-year duration in Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy, Medicine, or similar streams

Selection of candidates for admission to MBA at VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur is a two-step process. The applicants are shortlisted based on eligibility criteria and called for an online Personal Interview (PI). Final admission to MBA is offered on the basis of a cumulative score of the Application Rating (AR), performance score in CAT, and the candidate’s performance in the online PI round. IIT Kharagpur Cutoff 2025 will be updated here once out. The IIT Kharagpur 2024 cutoffs for Courses have been released for BTech, Integrated BTech, and BArch admissions. In Round 4, JoSAA cutoffs spanned from the 414 to the 19348 values. Among these, the B.Tech. (Hons.) in CSE stands out as a fiercely competitive option for General category students under the AI Quota.
IIT Kharagpur University cutoff 2024 in comparison with preceding two years cutoff, it is observed that the Institute has witnessed a fluctuating trend in its closing ranks. The Round 4 cutoff for this course stood at 277 in 2023 and 295 in 2022.
The least competitive course was Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch. Hons.), with a Round 4 closing rank of 19348 for the General category. The cut off rank in Round 6 for B.Tech. (Hons.) in Computer Science and Engineering is 279 which is very close to this range. This was for general category under All India quota. Unless the candidate belongs to some other category or domicile, one can not afford to score less than this.
