IIT Kharagpur MSc Eligibility & Highlights 2026

IIT Kharagpur also offers a Joint MSc-PhD course in eight specialisations. The course lasts for five-years, and admission to the same is based on IIT-JAM score, then an interview. Some of the key highlights around the IIT KGP MSc-PhD integrated programme, around its fee and seat intake for all specialisations, are as follows:

IIT Kharagpur offers a joint MTech/ MCP PhD programme to students who have completed their UG degree in the relevant stream. I am very much satisfied because of campus life and supportive faculty members.

Placements: Almost 35% of students get placed. The highest package is around 40 LPA and the lowest package is 20 LPA. Top recruiting companies like SLB and Cairn India Limited. Almost 15% of students get paid internships where as others prefer government PSU internships. The top roles offered in the course include creative and design team member, secretary of ESSC, etc.

Infrastructure: Classrooms are equipped with a projector, AC, and comfort benches. The library of IIT Kharagpur is Asia's largest library. Hostels have geysers, washing machines, canteen, etc. The whole campus is well-connected by a Wi-Fi facility which can be accessed only by roll number.

Faculty: The study curriculum is research-oriented. The course curriculum is suitable for research work, and only not industry-oriented. Semester exam question paper levels are moderate to hard. The pass percentage of the semester exam is almost 100%. Teachers are well-qualified and helpful.

Other: The campus is huge and spread over 2100 acres. It has a very good reputation in our country. Every year fests are arranged like a sports fest named Shaurya, a techno-management fest named Kshitij, and a springs fest. Road connectivity inside the campus is very good.

IIT kharagpur - The dream of youth.

Placements: Students who want to take placements can easily secure them after some exams. The average package is 12 lakh per annum, while the highest package was about 1 crore per annum. Top recruitment companies include Google, Microsoft, PwC, etc. Almost all students get internships, and the top roles for my course are as researchers.

Infrastructure: There's a fantastic hostel facility at IIT KGP. You can choose a single room or a double-bedded room with a fan, one bed, one study table and chair, and one cupboard in every room. Some of the rooms also have AC facilities. There is free Wi-Fi for every student, and the food is fantastic and delicious. You will also receive free healthcare. Additionally, there is a library and study room in every hall.

Faculty: The professors here are highly qualified, with almost all of them holding foreign degrees. The course is entirely relevant to industry standards. A short review for upcoming M.Sc. students in IIT Kharagpur.

Placements: I am a student of M.Sc. . Mathematics at IIT Kharagpur (batch of 2025). Generally, placements in the mathematics department are very good because M.Tech in CSDP is also included in the mathematics department. But 90 percent of M.Sc. students in mathematics who opt for placements get placed in various EdTechs or IT sectors, depending on there interest. In Edtechs Sri Chaitanya, Unacademy, Byju's, etc., students get placed there for around CTC 10–12 LPA. Some of the motivated students (including my seniors and batchmates) study data science, data analytics, and software development on their own and get placed at IBM, Google, TCS, Siemens, Amazon, and various HFTs for CTC 15, 20 LPA. But most of the placements in our department happen in the EdTech industry. Lastly, we have a mandatory 2-month summer internship program. Many of our seniors got internships in the IT sector, while others opted for academic internships. You can have a paid or unpaid internship, depending on the institute or company.

Infrastructure: You can do anything on your mind, and you will get top-notch facilities here. Cricket, football, swimming, tennis, squash. It's basically a never-ending list, and the craze for GC (competition between hostels) is immense. Also, we have a tournament called SHAURYA, where various institutions from West Bengle participate, and IIT KGP hosts the tournament. Facilities are not limited to sports only; you can also join instrumental music, sing, dance, play or anything else and also participate in inter-IIT competitions. And you can also join various clubs in Gymkhana. In short, you name something and you will find that there are many restaurants on campus as well. In new hostels, you will get single rooms with centralized AC, washing machines on every floor, centralized toilets, and bathrooms that get cleaned every day. In old hostels, you won't have access to AC, and you also have to share rooms with one or two roommates (depending on your luck). The quality of food in canteens is good; some of the night canteens are very famous for there food (JC Bose, VS, RK, etc.). The taste of mess food is basically a lottery case; some days it's good and some days it's terrible. But they use quality products that's ensured by boarders who have to do there mess duties. And you will find many restaurants on campus. And you will get free medicine from Frank Cross Pharmacy with the prescription of BC Roy Hospital (inside campus) if you are ill.

Faculty: Every teacher is highly qualified in IIT's and it reflects in there lectures. They are very helpful, and you can have discussions at any time with their convenience. They teach us what is helpful and relevant for our future (various exams or a PhD). You can not complain much about faculty members at any IIT (with a few exceptions, obviously). But exams are on the tougher side for every paper and the grading system for every teacher also varies. There are midterm and endterm examinations and you will not be given any study leave or gaps between exams.

Other: I was motivated to study mathematics; that's why I came here. You have access to one of Asia's biggest libraries and some of the best teachers in our country, that's for sure. Also, the campus life of IIT KGP is awesome; everyone knows about Springfest, the biggest fest in Southeast Asia and the biggest Techfest in India, where you can participate in various hackathons, robotics, AI competitions, etc. If you are an M.Sc. student, you can get an assistantship of 1000 INR per month, or you can apply for any state scholarship (Domicile of West Bengal) or central scholarship.

To summarize, this institute is the best.

Placements: More than 245 recruiters took part in 2022 placements drive at the iitkharagpur campus. A total of 1600 placement offers were made to students by recruiter. In additoin, 400+pre-placement offers were made to students. There were 35 international offers.

Infrastructure: IIT kharagpur has given the option to first year students to attend online classes from the campus from the next ontsh. The construction of the hostel meant for the first year students could not b completed on time becuase of the pandemic, now that pandemic induced restriction have been withdrawn.

Faculty: The undergraduate courses at iitkharagpur are known for their academic depth and professional learning flexibility, imbibed with options to earn minor or extra credits. Having an apt mix of basic sciences, engineering sciences, management project work and electives.

Other: To summarise life in one word, life in iitkgp is peace, irrespe active of whether you are a boy or a girl. Sex ratio is not soo good (1:12), but independence you get to be yourself is just great. In the first few months, hostels have a deadline 10 pm for the first years. But you can always inform and go out side for genuisne reasons.

Our college provides good infrastructure.

Placements: Around 50% of students got placed in different companies like Unacademy and Physical Wallah. There are some chemical industries like Dr. Reddy, Sun Pharma, etc. All students got internships in our course. The top role offered is software engineer.

Infrastructure: Laboratory is very good in our college. The old hostels are not good but new hostels are well-maintained with good facilities. Old hostel rooms are not cleared like RP hall.

Faculty: All teachers are helpful and polite. This course is well structured. The teaching quality is also very good. They are always available to solve our problems. The course curriculum is relevant to make students ready for the industry.

Other: The practical experience is better with this course. Spring fest, inter IIT match, and alumni meets are also conducted in our college.

IIT KGP is the oldest IIT of India. It have a heritage and world class alumni network.

Placements: Approximately 60-70% students got placed. The lowest salary is 6LPA and the maximum is 24LPA. Flipkart, Amazon, Sony, Google, Adobe, Unacademy, BYJU, Goldman Sachs, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank are the top recruiters for us. All most all the students got internship from our course. The top roles of our course is Teacher, Business Developer, Android Developer, Data Scientist etc.

Infrastructure: The entire campus of IIT KGP is Wi-Fi connected. Also you have your personal LAN in your room. The Nalanda Classroom complex is exceptionally beautiful. The Library of IIT KGP is one of the largest library in all over Asia. But the hostels of IIT KGP are not that good. They are in deplorable conditions.

Faculty: The teachers of IIT KGP are extremely knowledgeable and highly qualified. They are very much research oriented. Obviously the exams are quite difficult as it is one of the best institutions of our country. But the Professors are very humble and down to earth people.

Other: IIT KGP has its own MCM scholarship Programme. Also for entertainment purpose we have Spring Fest, Kshitij, Ges Global.

IIT Kharagpur MSc Scholarships 2026

IIT Kharagpur students of MSc-PhD Joint programme are offered a few scholarships. The details for all these scholarships are as follows:

Merit-cum-Means Scholarship of INR 1,000 per month is offered up to 25% of the students (for the first two years of MSc programme)
Students not covered under the above point are paid a scholarship of INR 1000 per month for the first four semesters provided they give an undertaking to continue with the PhD programme
