Deepanwita Sahu, a student of Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, talks about how she cracked her college admissions and why she chose engineering over medical studies. Read more on Shiksha.

My choice of subjects has always been a bit weird. In school, my favourite subjects were History, Geography, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and Physics. I was never very interested in computers. So, accordingly, I chose Science in Class XI with PCMB, English and Geography as my subject combinations. I secured good marks in boards and as usual had high expectations. I wanted to be a doctor and studied hard again for NEET the following year, but in vain. I couldn’t make it in government college as I was short of a little marks.

My dreams were shattered. But then I thought of getting into Engineering as I gave other Entrances too. Well I must say, I wasn’t wrong. I was initially tensed of choosing a wrong profession because I chose ECE over CSE. But I’m happy that I was proven wrong. Choosing ECE was not a bad decision. I chose it because I was not in love with coding, but I loved robots!

College admissions

To get into my present college, I had to appear for WBJEE. As I was a medical aspirant, I was detached from Mathematics for almost a year. My teacher literally pressurised me to pursue Mathematics for some-time to keep other options open. And look it worked!

I didn’t practice much maths before JEE Main but still managed to qualify for JEE Advance with a rank of AIR 44k. I could have got into some national college but I didn’t prefer going too away from home. Before WBJEE, I had one month left to practice maths and I utilised that time well enough, and that’s why I could secure a rank around 3k.

Some of the entrance examinations I appeared for was NEET, JEE Main, JEE Advance, PUBDET (Presidency college’s own exam for admission in UG), JENPAUH (admission to BSc nursing).

I was sure of getting a good government college/ stream in JENPAUH, PUBDET, WBJEE. So, among them, I chose WBJEE.

Well, I forget to mention that all the ranks that I secured was without any Coaching. Trust me, to crack the exams that I cracked, you don’t need coaching. The only thing you need to do is invest proper timing and hard work!

College life

My college life is somehow relatable to the life shown in movies!

We attend classes mostly for attendance, I may sound weird but it’s the truth. In college, most of the students attend classes only for attendance. But there are few classes which are awesome and you love to attend them. In my case, it was the Chemistry class in first semester and Physics in the next! The labs are really cool. You would love it.

Apart from academics, I am part of a few clubs in my college like CFI (Centre for Innovation), Coders, Art club, Photography club, Jyoti (our college student run night school for needy) and Rotaract club!

As an engineer, I am tea-holic. Whenever, I have nothing to do, I’ll have tea. You would find me in the canteen or tea stalls many times.

If given a chance, I would like to enhance our present clubs and hold interactive sessions with juniors as much as possible as I think it’s the best way to help juniors in their future. Also, seniors and junior can collaborate and make something innovative. CFI is already doing it in small scale in our college.

I have changed a lot within this short span of one-year. In school, I was known as a bookaholic, studious, shy and an introvert little kid. But my status changed drastically. Today I’m not shy. I’m able to talk to people and most importantly I am interactive. I don’t study the whole day. I’m now technically sound. I was the person who didn’t like computer much and now I’m the one who works for making Robots.

I worked hard to make a line follower robot and in fact succeeded in our Tech-fest, Sristi 2k18. I know this might be a small achievement for many but for me it’s huge.

Lastly, I can say I’m not the same Deepanwita Sahu I used to be an year before.I’ve changed, and changed for betterment!
