NIT, Hamirpur

Hello, my name is Prateek Rathore. I have been a sincere student right from the beginning. Before class 10, I was not much worried about studies and competitive exams, but after that, a change occurred in my life and I became very conscious about my studies. I didn’t take any coaching for the competitive exams till class 12. Actually, my parents wanted me to join a coaching institute for Boards in class 11 and class 12. The reason behind this decision of my parents was that there was 60-40 rule in JEE Main, according to which there is a contribution of class 12 marks to the JEE Main rank. I scored 92% in class 12 CBSE examination. In class 11 and 12, I used to prepare for JEE Main and JEE Advanced and for various other competitive exams on my own. I tried hard and managed to get 131 marks in JEE Main. But I failed in JEE Advanced. I felt bad but that did not matter because I had one more chance. That year, due to the 60- 40 rule, I had not secured a good rank in JEE Main inspite of getting 131 marks. Maybe, God wanted something else.

My parents decided to send me to Kota. I took coaching for IIT JEE from an institute. I had got admitted to the institute late and therefore, I had to cover the backlog of classes in a short time. There was regular homework given to us and it was to be completed to understand the concepts better. There were 10-12 tests conducted by the institute. I performed badly in all tests but I believed that all my concepts were clear and there was some other reason for the poor performance. I felt low but there was continuous support from my parents and my elder brother.

One day, I was not feeling well so I went to the doctor in the institute. There, he was guiding a student who had the issue of stress. The doctor asked him the reason for his stress and he said that he was not able to do well in the exams and was not able to sleep well at night due to the tension. The doctor told him that the result in the institute didn’t matter. The result on the final day mattered. The person who does well on the last day is better than those who are doing well in the institute but not in the finals. This motivated me a lot and gave me a new energy. After my recovery, my parents told me to relax and be focused. Then I started doing revisions and doing everything in a planned manner. After the completion of the whole syllabus, there were major tests and I scored better than those who used to do well in the regular tests. I started feeling confident. Then came the final day- April 3, 2017, the date of JEE Main. I was confident. I attempted questions for about 240 marks and got 177. Due to very silly mistakes, I scored less but still, the score was more than sufficient. I secured 14515 rank in JEE Main.

Presently, I am studying in National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh (Electrical Engineering). I also cleared JEE Advanced 2017 with about 10000 rank and also many other competitive exams. My parents were happy with my results. Right now, I have completed my 1st year of Engineering and till now, I have learned only the basics of my stream and there is much more left to be learned in Engineering in the coming years. In the college, I learned many more things like presentation skills, communication skills, group-forming and many more. According to me, college life is the golden period of life.
