In the PSTET exam, papers 1 and 2 contain 150 objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs) each. Paper 1 comprises 5 sections i.e. Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. Paper 2 comprises 4 sections with a choice in the fourth one i.e. Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language-II, and Mathematics and Science or Social Studies. PSTET Marking Scheme: 1 mark is allotted for every correct answer and there is no negative marking in the PSTET exam. 

The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) releases the PSTET Notification containing the important details regarding the exam such as exam date, application process, exam pattern, syllabus, eligibility criteria, result declaration criteria, etc. PSTET Notification will be released by the Punjab Government in PDF format on the official website. Punjab Teacher Eligibility Test (PSTET) levels are as follows: I. Primary Level (Class I-V) II. Upper Primary Level (Class IV-VIII) Educational Qualification: 1. Minimum educational qualifications for becoming Teacher for Classes I-V (Primary Level): Degree with Minimum 50% from a UGC recognised university/ SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ freedom fighters will be given for 5% in Degree & 02 years Diploma (DEd) from NCTE/ Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or Degree with 02 years BTC, CT (Nursery)/ Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) (02 years) from Established by Law and UGC recognised university. or Degree with qualify in Special BTC Training from a UGC recognised university or 4 years Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd) 2. Minimum educational qualification for becoming Teacher for Classes VI-VIII (Elementary Level): Degree with BTC from a UGC recognised university & National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) or Degree with 50% from a UGC recognised institution/ Degree (BEd)/ BEd Special Education from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or Intermediate with 50% & 4 years BA/ BSCEd/ BAEd from recognised by NCTE / UGC or Intermediate with minimum 50% & 4 years Bachelor’s degree in elementary education (BElEd). or Degree with minimum 45% from established by Law and UGC recognised institution (SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ freedom fighter candidates will be given for 5%) & BEd.

To qualify the PSTET, candidates are required to get the minimum qualifying marks set by the conducting authority.

For General Category Candidates
Minimum 60% marks to qualify.

For Reserved Category Candidates (SC/ST/OBC/PH)
There is a relaxation of 5% for reserved category candidates, so they need to score a minimum of 55% marks to qualify.

The PSTET exam marks vary depending upon the paper. It has two papers- Paper 1 and 2. First paper is for those candidates who wish to teach from classes I to V and second paper for those who are interested in teaching from classes 6 to 8th. The total marks for both papers separately is 150.

Punjab State Teacher Eligibility Test (PSTET) is a state-level exam conducted by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) to determine the eligibility of candidates for Primary (Classes 1 to 5) and Upper Primary (Classes 6-8) level teachers in the schools of Punjab. The PSTET exam is conducted in two shifts for two papers - Paper 1 and 2. PSTET Paper 1 is conducted for candidates who want to become Classes 1-5 teachers and Paper 2 is for candidates who want to become teachers of Classes 6-8. Candidates who want to become Classes 1-8 teachers need to appear for both papers.

The difficulty level of the PSTET exam depends on the preparation of the candidate. It is generally considered as moderately challenging.

After qualifying the PSTET exam, the candidates are awarded with the eligibility Certificate. PSTET does not guarantee any job after the candidate qualifies the exam. Though, the candidates will become eligible for the recruitment exam after qualifying for the PSTET exam. The recruitment exam for recruiting teachers in the schools of Punjab. The candidates can apply for the different vacancies according to their eligibility. The Punjab government releases the vacancies for the teachers according to the needs of the state.

Candidates planning to teach Classes 1 to 5 need to qualify PSTET Paper 1. Candidates planning to teach Classes 6 to 8 need to qualify for PSTET Paper 2. Candidates planning to teach Classes 1 to 8 need to qualify both papers. The candidates have to apply for the papers according to their eligibility set by the board. The educational qualification criteria has been given below for the candidates:

  • Class 12 with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in the final year of 2 years Diploma in Elementary Education
  • Class 12 with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in the final year of 4 years Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd)
• Paper 2
  • Graduation with a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education. Graduation with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in one-year BEd

The PSTET Exam syllabus includes subjects such as Child Development and Pedagogy, Language 1 (Punjabi) Language 2 (English), Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Mathematics and Science, and Social Studies/Social Science. 

Generally the syllabus of the PSTET exam does not change frequently that is the main subject remain consistent. The syllabus is based on the topics covered in the primary and upper primary school curriculum. Minor changes can be observed at time including exam pattern, type of question, difficulty level, etc. but the overall syllabus remains the same. 

No, it is not mandatory to appear for both PSTET  Paper 1 and 2. Candidates have to choose to appear for one, depending on their desired teaching level.

No, you can apply and appear for the PSTET exam for any number of times. The PSTET Certificate is valid for a lifetime according to the norms of NCTE.
