The study of the relationship between man and his environment is called Environmental Geography. It is a sub-discipline in the study of geography. Anthropogenic activities have a serious impact on the environment and Environmental Geography tries to address these concerns. It deals with the changes in the three components of the biosphere, namely the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere. The importance of the bio-geo-chemical cycle and the balance of energy is also addressed in this course. The social hazards such as poverty, environmental degradation and water and air pollution and their impact on the environment is studied in this course. It also deals with the efficiency of environmental management policies and legislations adopted in India.
You can learn the basic principles of climatology, geomorphology, economic geography, the geography of soil, hydrology and oceanography in this course. They also learn the nuances of GIS and Remote Sensing and Surveying which are important tools for geographical studies. After completing this course, candidates can become Academicians, cartographers, environmental scientists, advisors and land surveyors. This course offers a diverse range of opportunities and candidates can work in top environmental conservation agencies such as Greenpeace India, Wildlife Protection Society, Hara Jeevan etc. This course is offered as a specialisation or elective course in the postgraduate level or MA/MSc in Geography.
Environmental Geography- Important Facts
- Eligibility and Skillset- To pursue MA/MSc in Geography (Specialisation in Environmental Geography) must have completed their graduation in BA/BSc in Geography from a recognised university and scored a minimum of 50%. They must have good observation and research skills and must be critical and responsible.
- Course Structure- Environmental Geography is offered as a specialisation through elective courses. It is a two-year program comprising four semesters and core subjects carrying 5 credits each and elective subjects carrying 4/5 credits each. Candidates need to submit a project report/dissertation based on the field survey conducted by them during the course. Candidates must also submit assignments and attend classes regularly to secure attendance marks. They must also appear for the mid-semester examinations and end-semester examinations to successfully clear the course.
- Learning Outcomes- After completion of this course, candidates will learn the principles of geomorphology, spatial variations witnessed across India, statistical methods to conduct geographical research and the application of GIS and surveying methods for geographical analysis.
- Fees Structure- The course structure for pursuing MA/MSc ranges from INR 5000 to INR 20,000 per annum in government colleges whereas the fee structure for pursuing this course from private colleges ranges from INR 30,000 to INR 80,000 per annum.
