What is AIIMS Nursing 2026 Normalisation Process?
The Normalisation is done in all the exams where the paper is conducted in multiple shifts. It is a process to provide level playing field to all the candidates competing for the same number of seats but with different question papers.
Normalisation process takes into account the competitive position of the candidate in a single shift and compare the performance of the candidates in multiple shifts. The AIIMS notified its Normalisation process in 2023. Let us see the AIIMS Nursing Normalisation in Detail:
AIIMS Nursing Percentile Score
The raw marks of all the candidates will be transformed to percentile. Percentile Scores are the relative performance of all the candidates who appeared in the exam. The Raw Marks are transformed to the scale ranging from 100 to 0 for each shift. The marks obtained between the highest and lowest scores are converted to appropriate Percentiles.
The topper of each shift will have 100 percentile score. The marks of the candidates will be converted into percentile based on the relative performance of the candidate(s) in a shift. It is important to note that the AIIMS Normalisation Percentile Score will be calculated upto 7 decimal points to minimize the number of tie cases.
How is AIIMS Normalisation done?
The normalisation is a comparative performance measurement process only. In the Normalisation, the highest score of the shift will be the 100th Percentile. The lowest score would have a percentile depending on the total number of candidates who have taken the examination.
Suppose 100 candidates appeared in a shift. The 80 % marks is the highest raw marks in that shift (A). The lowest marks is (-3/200 = -1/5%) (B). If no other candidate has scores equal to either A or B, then the Percentile Score of A, the top scorer, shall be 100 [because all or 100% of candidates have scored EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN A]. The Percentile Score of B, the lowest scorer, shall be 1 since the percentage of candidates with scores EQUAL TO OR BELOW would be 1 [(1/100) *100].
Let us suppose a candidate T has the percentile score of 70; it indicates that 70% of the candidates in that shift have scored either equal to or less than the raw score of T. Other way around is that 30% of the candidates have scored higher than T in the same shift.
Step-By-Step Process of AIIMS Normalisation
The candidates can understand the AIIMS Normalisation process by getting the details of each step. Let us dive in detail
Distribution of candidates in shifts
The total applicants are divided among the number of shifts, keeping their number in each shift almost similar.
Preparation of Result of Each Shift
The exam conducting body will prepare the result of both the shifts in the following manner:
- Raw Score
- Percentage
- Percentile score (upto 7 decimal points)
The result of both the shifts will then be merged based on the percentile scores and arranged in the order of percentile to form the merit list.

Resolution of Tie Cases in AIIMS Nursing Exam
The AIIMS has notified a detailed process of resolution of tie cases. Firstly, the percentile scores are calculated upto 7 decimal points. It will reduce the number of Tie cases.
Even after that, if two or more candidates have same (tied) percentile scores upto 7 decimal points, the candidate having higher marks in the below given subject(in that order) will be preferred over others.
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
- Date of Birth (age) – The older candidates will be preferred over the younger one.
The percentile of General Knowledge and Aptitude will not be considered for Tie-Resolution.
