What Is UPCATET?

UPCATET is a state-level entrance test for admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes at the agricultural universities of Uttar Pradesh. The universities take turns to conduct it. For 2027 the job might fall to Banda University of Agriculture and Technology, and the scores will be used by several other colleges/universities.
The 2027 application window will open from March to May. Admit cards will be released in June, and the undergraduate paper will be conducted in June as. Results will be declared by the end of June, and counselling will continue till October.

What is OUAT?

OUAT’s entrance exam is not a state-wide test shared with other universities. It is OUAT's own common entrance examination, and it fills seats in OUAT's colleges only. Besides B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, the same exam covers Horticulture, Forestry, Community Science, Fisheries (B.F.Sc), Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc & A.H) and B.Tech Agricultural Engineering.
For 2027, Form-A will open from April to May and Form-B from May to June. The computer-based test will start in June, and the percentile will be declared in July. Ranks will be also declared in July, and counselling will take place in August. Classes will begin in September.

The Course Differences: UPCATET vs OUAT

On paper, the Agriculture degree itself is the same. Both routes lead to a B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture that runs for four years under the semester system. OUAT's prospectus states the minimum residential period as four consecutive years. The course differences of UPCATET vs OUAT are:

  • UPCATET opens up a wider menu at the undergraduate level: B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Community Science, B.F.Sc, B.V.Sc & A.H. There are B.Tech programmes such as Biotechnology, Agricultural Engineering, Dairy Technology, Food Technology and Sugarcane Science and Technology.
  • OUAT offers B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Community Science, B.F.Sc, B.V.Sc & A.H and B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering).
The number of campuses is another practical difference. OUAT teaches B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture at three colleges: Bhubaneswar, Chiplima (Sambalpur) and Bhawanipatna. UPCATET gives access to eight colleges across the four universities that offer the programme.

Eligibility: UPCATET vs OUAT

UPCATET-  For B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture, an Intermediate pass in Agriculture Science, PCB, PCM or PCMB is required. Portals covering the exam report an age bracket of 16 to 22 years, with extra years of relaxation for reserved categories, and a requirement of Uttar Pradesh domicile for state quota seats. Confirm both in the official brochure before you write them into any plan, because secondary sources do not agree on every detail.
OUAT-  Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Biology, and at least 50% aggregate marks, including any extra optional subject is a must. For SC, ST, PwD and a few other categories the minimum is 40%. You must complete 17 years by 31 December 2027, which means a person should be born on or before 31 December 2010.
Another advantage of OUAT is that it has a residency rule that UPCATET shows less prominently. General admissions are open to students who studied Odia as their mother-tongue language at an Odisha school, or whose parents are permanent residents of Odisha, or whose parents work for the Odisha or Central government or a public undertaking in the state. Seats under the ICAR quota, the state-sponsored quota and a few other categories are exempt from this rule.

Note: A small point that matters: a student who did not study Mathematics or Biology in Class 12 can still apply to OUAT, but will have to complete bridge courses in those subjects during the first two semesters.

Exam Pattern: UPCATET vs OUAT

UPCATET is an offline paper marked on an OMR sheet. It runs for three hours and carries 200 multiple-choice questions. Candidates can pick a paper group while applying:

  • PCB: General Knowledge (20), Physics (50), Chemistry (50), Biology (80)
  • PCM: General Knowledge (20), Physics (50), Chemistry (50), Mathematics (80)
  • PAG: General Knowledge (20), Agricultural Physics (25), Agricultural Chemistry (25), Agricultural Zoology (25), Agricultural Botany (25), Agronomy (25), Animal Husbandry and Dairying (10), Horticulture (15), Agricultural Engineering (10), Agricultural Statistics and Mathematics (20)

OUAT is a computer-based test of two hours with 200 multiple-choice questions in English, each worth one mark. There is no negative marking. Physics carries 66 marks, Chemistry 66, and the optional subject, Mathematics or Biology, 68. You choose the optional subject in Form-A and cannot change it after the form closes. There is no General Knowledge section and no Agriculture paper.
Note: That last point matters for students who studied Agriculture as a Class 12 subject. UPCATET has a paper built around it. OUAT does not.

Selection Process and Counselling

UPCATET ranks candidates on their entrance performance. Counselling is online: registration, choice filling, choice locking, seat allotment, document upload, payment of the security fee and reporting at the allotted college. After the first rounds, the university conducts offline and special offline counselling for seats that stayed vacant. Reservation under UPCATET includes SC 21%, ST 2%, OBC 27% and EWS 10%, with horizontal reservation for PwD, freedom fighter and defence personnel wards.
OUAT builds its merit list from a weighted score: 25% of your Class 10 percentage, 25% of your Class 12 PCM or PCB percentage (whichever is higher), and 50% of your entrance percentile. A candidate with 80% in Class 10, 70% in Class 12 and a 90.456 percentile, for example, ends up with a weighted score of 82.728. The percentile is calculated session-wise, because the test runs in multiple shifts.
Two OUAT rules deserve a warning:
Form-B, where you enter your board marks, is mandatory; a candidate who writes the exam but skips Form-B gets no rank.
And a wrong entry of marks, if caught at counselling, leads to denial of admission.

Process to Attend the Counselling at OUAT: Counselling at OUAT is physical. Candidates must be prepared with all the documents while going for the counselling.

  • Attend the date on your rank card
  • Bring original documents plus two sets of self-attested copies, '
  • Choose from the seats on display,
  • Pay the admission fee by demand draft.
  • Note: Seats left over go to spot counselling, and are filled on a cost-sharing basis.

What is your choice? UPCATET vs OUAT

For most students this is not really a free choice. Where you live and where your parents are domiciled decide which of the two doors is open. Within that limit, a few things are worth weighing.

  • Domicile first: UPCATET is built for Uttar Pradesh students, and OUAT's general seats are built for Odisha students. Outsiders can reach OUAT through the ICAR quota instead.
  • Class 12 stream: If you studied Agriculture, UPCATET's PAG paper lets you use that knowledge. OUAT tests only PCM or PCB.
  • Your tolerance for risk: UPCATET's negative marking punishes guesswork. OUAT has none.
  • Board marks:  At OUAT half the merit score comes from Class 10 and Class 12 marks, so a weak board result can pull down a good entrance score.
  • Choice of campus. UPCATET offers eight B.Sc Agriculture colleges across Uttar Pradesh. OUAT offers three, with Bhubaneswar as the main one.
  • Cost: OUAT's general-seat fees are modest. Compare them with the UPCATET figures once you have them from the brochure.
