- The idea of building a University in Lucknow was first initiated by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, who contributed an article to the columns of "The Pioneer'' urging the foundation of a University in Lucknow.
- The history of the University of Lucknow dates back to 1919 when a General Committee of educationists met at a conference at Government House, Lucknow, and proposed a scheme for the new university on 10 November 1919.
- It was decided that the University of Lucknow would be a kind of Unitary, Teaching, and Residential University recommended by the Calcutta University Mission, 1919, and should consist of the Faculties of Arts, including Oriental Studies, Science, Medicine, Law, etc.
- By the end of the conference, it was declared that the Rajas of Mahmudabad and Jahangirabad would be responsible for making donations of INR 1 Lakh.
- Eventually, The King George's Medical College (King George's Medical University), The Canning College, and The Isabella Thoburn College provided structural, educational and administrative help for the establishment of the university.
