M.Sc. in Marine Science - Batch of 2025
1.4
Reality of M.Sc. in Marine Sciences from Goa University.
Placements: The course is limited to 20 students at once. There are no placements that the department provides. Instead, they won't allow me to opt for internships during the course. Institutes like NIO are good exposure but they are also disappointed with the level of knowledge students are passing out from GU. Attendance is another hot topic.
Infrastructure: Laboratories and classrooms are fairly equipped with instruments like LAF and AAS. Classroom is facilitated with projector and air-conditioning. Wi-Fi is available but not working properly. Computer labs have a lot of issues that don't get resolved immediately. Hostel facilities for graduate and post-graduate students are the same and allow two students in a single room. Mess food is really the worst, and there are a lot of complaints that are delayed several times.
Faculty: Many teachers are biased and support favoritism. If you don't stay in their good books, you might not be treated well. Teaching quality of few teachers is fair, but others are really bad at teaching. The curriculum is relevant but there are a lot of things that are necessary to be learned from a research point of view. But they don't really teach them. It definitely does not polish the student, least that teachers find the positives within the student and guide them to use it efficiently. The semester exams are moderately difficult.
Other: I had chosen this course for the sole reason of placement. But I was misguided. There are no best things about career. The students in marine science program couldn't enjoy the events or take part in them without bunking the lectures. Scholarships are available but they take a lot of time to sanction it (literally it took one whole year to credit the amount. The lectures are so hectic and go up to 05:30 PM. There is no hope for the improvements.

Very satisfying service and management.
Placements: 55% of the students placed in our department. The highest package was 8 LPA, the lowest package was 3 LPA, and the average package was 6 LPA. Some students got internships in a few companies that reached our college.
Infrastructure: College campus is surrounded by plants, trees, and hills. The classrooms and labs are modified and well-managed. Wi-Fi facilities are only for teachers and college staff. A vast collection of books is available in the library. The quality of food in the mess and canteen is good.
Faculty: Teachers provided for our course are not very qualified and knowledgeable. They do not take much interest in teaching or helping the students. The teaching quality is average. Our course is curriculum-relevant, and it makes the students industry-ready.

The hostel is good and calm. There is equipment for playing purposes.
Placements: From the third semester, students are eligible for getting placements. Companies like Cairn India, SLB, Exonn, Halliburton, etc., come every year for placements. The highest package is around 24 LPA and the average is 13 LPA. The percentage of students getting placed is very less. After getting a degree anyone can take competitive exams like GATE for PSUs and GSI and if anybody is interested they can go for PhDs.
Infrastructure: There is also a hostel in our college. The fee for the hostel is Rs. 17,000 per year which does include food and bills. The food is average which is served in the canteen. You need to contact the college office to register a hostel room and location is Panjim.
Faculty: I chose a program within the Department of Applied Geology, i.e. the M.Sc. tech in applied Geophysics course which I had chose because of its uniqueness and for its job aspects and research aspect which is quite good in the field of Oil and gas Industries. The curriculum prepared us well with various mentorship from different universities and which make us learn well about day to day application in the Geophysics field.

Commonly asked questions
On All Courses
Q:   Can students from other states apply for a Goa University BE course?
A:

Yes, students from outside Goa can apply, but most seats are reserved for local residents under the 10-year residency rule. A small percentage of seats are usually available for "All India" candidates, often based on JEE Main scores rather than the local GCET. If you are a non-resident seeking a BE degree at Goa University, you must check the DTE's specific seat matrix to see which colleges offer these open category spots.

Q:   Is there an age limit for starting a Goa University BE course?
A:

There is no specified upper age limit for students willing to pursue BE from Goa University. You just should have passed your Class 12 with the required Science subjects and marks; you are eligible to apply for the entrance exams. This is particularly helpful for working professionals.

The college has good infrastructure and facilities.
Placements: The percentage of the students who were placed in my department was 45%. The highest package was 7.5 lacs and the average package was 6 lacs and the lowest package was 4 lacs. Several students also got internships in many companies who came to our institute.
Infrastructure: Classrooms and labs are very comfortable and clean. All the requirements are present in the well-stocked library. The hostel rooms are very nice. The food available in the mess and canteen is made hygienic. Multiple sports and medical facilities available.
Faculty: Teachers are very supportive and knowledgeable. They provide both online and offline resources for studies so that students can perform better in exams. Our course is curriculum-relevant and many activities are happening every month. Semester exams are easy.

Goa University is value for money.
Placements: Goa University has an amazing placement rate of 80% but in my course, the placement rate is a bit low because fewer students take college placements. Students find better jobs themselves. Students can work with faculty in the form of internships.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of the university is value for money and all facilities are available for students. Departments are situated in an environment area and the campus covers a very large area of around 200 acres which includes a stadium, library, playgrounds, sitting areas, canteen, etc. Wi-Fi is covered all over the hostel and campus premises.
Faculty: Our faculty members are average. Many students face language challenges while they are teaching topics to students. The curriculum is relevant according to our course. Semester exams can be qualified easily by attending regular classes and studying a day before the exam.

Good infrastructure and good lab? To research.
Placements: There are so many companies visiting our campus like Zscaler, Walmart, Accenture, PayPal, Zoho, TCS, Cognizant, etc. The average salary of our college is 6 LPA and the biggest is 35 LPA. Out of 100 percent of students, 60-70 percent of students only get placements.
Infrastructure: In our Sastra Deemed University, we have many clubs created by CSE and ECE students that are organized with the help of faculty members. They will conduct workshops and coding competitions and they keep so many competitions. A good gym and a good canteen; there are so many canteens in our college and we will go to so many canteens. If you ask our students, they will tell you so many canteen names and a big library which is constructed as a separate building.
Faculty: Per semester, they conduct 3 CIAs, best of 2, they will take as internal marks out of 50, and we write semester for 50 marks. In a 60-student class, only 25 cleared the semester, and we have an evaluation option for that, we have to pay 1000. The curriculum was good, faculty members were experienced. It will be tough; whatever you write, they won’t put marks, they want a clear cut.

Good overall can improve.
Placements: In my course placements aren't available however you can definitely apply to various institutions here such as the National Institute of Oceanography and NCOAR. These institutions take in students from the Marine Sciences discipline and many go there for Ph.D.
Infrastructure: Good infrastructure and basic facilities are provided here which can be improved. At the same time the hostel fees are pretty reasonable and the mess food is also good. The hostel also invests time in holding events such as sports and cultural events.
Faculty: The professors are well respected within their field of study with some working on various projects with prestigious organizations. Their ability to guide students is excellent allowing for a great learning experience. The examinations have a decent marking system here.
Other: Marine Sciences is a discipline that allows us to study oceans in a wider scope. The only thing I would like for them to improve is to increase access to institutions through projects and internships that work in these specific fields. Campus life is great with various fests and events taking place throughout the year.

The first-year common syllabus of the Goa University BE course is strategically designed to keep your options open and provide a safety net of knowledge. Because you cover the basics of various engineering streams, you develop a "big picture" view of the industry.
