The modes of Gauhati University course admissions are online and offline. Admission to various courses is based on merit and entrance exam scores. The cut off changes every year. Hence, the students must visit the official website of the university and check the updated cut off. In general, the basic eligibility criteria involves passing Class 12 with a minimum of 40% to 55% aggregate (depending on the selected course). For postgraduate courses, the basic eligibility criteria involves pass in bachelor's course with a minimum of 45%-60% aggregate (depending on the selected course). The accepted entrance exams are MAT,  CMAT,  CAT,  CMAT, and others.

It also has an Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) to offer distance learning programmes to the students. Gauhati University admission process is completely online; for all PG courses, it is subject to candidates' performance in the Offline Entrance Test, conducted by the university. For a few courses, such as BTech and MBA, it also accepts national/state-level entrance exams for admission like JEE Main, GATE, and others. Candidates must study the GATE exam pattern, attempt GATE question papers, and hence prepare well in advance for admission.

Gauhati University recognises both state and central board scores for admission into the BSc programme. Some of the boards include CBSE, AHSEC, ISCE, ISC etc. Candidates can apply for admission at the university if they have secure a minimum aggregate of 40% from a state or central recognised board. The admission into the programme take place through the CUET-UG entrance exam. So, Candidates will have to appear for that exam once they have cleared their Class 12.

Offered through JEE Main ranks and counselling, Gauhati University cutoff for BTech is released round-wise. Going as per the last three year trends, the expected Gauhati University cutoff 2024 can be anticipated. For JEE Main Counselling Round 1, B.Tech. in Computer Science Engineering can range between 29284 and 39338, B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering can range between 43455 and 47966, B.Tech. in Civil Engineering can range between 47559 and 54827, B.Tech. in Instrumentation Engineering can range between 50806 and 52910 and B.Tech. in Food Processing Technology can range between 44928 and 63869.
