In 2016, the State Government created Himachal Pradesh National Law University through a legislative act. The Himachal Pradesh High Court is in charge of the Shimla-based university. The university is associated with BCI and recognized by the UGC. PhD, UG, and PG programs are available at NLU Shimla. At HPNLU Shimla, the flagship programs are BBA LLB and BA LLB.

There are no other branch, Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU) is located in Shimla district Ghandal and was established in the year 2016, by the Himachal Pradesh Act of 2016. The university has now become a part of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) consortium. The university is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and ranked 5 among NLU’s by CLAT Cutoff list. At present, the university provides students with undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs and doctoral programs.
The BA LLB (Hons) course is Five-Year Integrated Programme. Under the BA LLB (Hons) programme, students have the option to choose one from, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology, as their ‘major’ courses.
There are a total of 120 seats in BA LLB (Hons) course of Himachal Pradesh National Law University. Out of the total intake, 15% seats are reserved for SC and 7.5% for ST category candidates. For aspirants belonging to Himachal Pradesh, 25% seats are reserved. Candidates are offered seat in BA LLB (Hons) programme based on CLAT score.
Admissions shall be made strictly on merit on the basis of marks obtained in the Entrance Test provided he / she obtains at least 50% marks in the Entrance Test (45% marks for SC/ST candidates). This is a two year programme of regular study.
The cutoff for Himachal Pradesh National Law University Shimla in 2023 will be determined by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLU) during the CLAT counseling process. Candidates who have appeared in CLAT 2023 exam and meet the HPNLU 2023 Shimla cut-off scores will be considered for admission.

Candidates, who have been allocated a seat in the second list and applied for revision, should check the status of their seat in the third list. Those, who have been allotted a seat in the HPNLU Shimla Second Provisional Allotment List, must complete the process of exercising any one of the actions mentioned below:

Himachal Pradesh National Law University has a dedicated Placement Assistant Cell (PAC) that comprises placement and internship committees. Further, the three-year and five-year programs have 12 and 20 weeks internships modules.

The NLU Shimla CLAT Cutoff 2026 has been released for round 2 for multiple categories under both the All India and Home State quota. The cutoff was out in the form of opening and closing ranks.
For the General HS category, the cutoff was 11211 for the B.A LL.B (Hons.) course, and 16167 for B.B.A.LL.
