Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has given an extension of three months from November 5 to the search committee to make recommendations for the appointment of VC of Kerala University, a Raj Bhavan official said.  The tenure of the Kerala University Vice Chancellor will expire on October 24. The Kerala University representative has not been selected by the search committee formed by the Governor.

"The chancellor is pleased to grant an extension of time to the search committee constituted to make recommendations for the appointment of Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala for further periods of three months from November 5. All other terms of the notification dated August 5 will remain unchanged," the Raj Bhavan statement said.

Earlier, the Governor was asked if he will sign the Universities Law Amendment Bill that is lying pending with him as he believes that the bill aims at appointing the unqualified relatives of the Chief Minister and ministers in universities.

Yes, admission to the postgraduate-level course is based on a common entrance exam conducted by the university. It is conducted by CSSAC. Candidates seeking admission must take the test as re-examination is not carried out under any circumstances. Kerala University PG Entrance Exam response sheets are marked either digitally or by a examiners panel approved by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. The type of questions asked in the exams are multiple choice types. Additionally, negative marking is also applicable, and hence, 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.

A: 

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree issued by a recognised university or authority in the subject chosen for MSc specialisation become eligible for Kerala University MSc admission. Additonally, the applicant must hold the relevant documents as proof for eligibility verification. Below are the details for Kerala University MSc eligibility:

  • Graduates who have passed the qualifying examination in CBCS Pattern-2013 admission onwards (BSc in relevant subjects) with at least 5.5 CGPA out of 10 (2.2 CGPA out of 4 for graduates who have passed qualifying examination in CBCS Pattern-prior to 2013) can apply for Kerala University MSc.
  • Graduates who have passed qualifying examination (BSc) in annual scheme/ other pattern with at least 55% aggregate can also apply.

"I won't allow the appointment of unqualified relatives of CM and ministers in the universities...I am not a rubber stamp. I will apply my mind, come to my own judgment, and then decide what's in accordance with the law, constitution and convention," Khan had said.

The University Laws Amendment Bill, that aims to curtail the power of the Governor in the selection of vice-chancellors, was passed by the Kerala government this month. Since then, the bill has been pending before the Governor.

"Everything will be considered on merit. The government cannot be given the power to appoint the Vice Chancellors. I am saying it clearly, this will amount to executive interference," Khan had said on the matter of the University Laws Amendment Bill.

The university provides relaxation of 2% marks from the prescribed minimum for admission to SEBC and OEC category candidates. SC/ST candidates need 35% aggregate for the degree examination. The degree possessed by the candidates must be approved by the University of Kerala. Final Year Students can also apply.

"The Chief Minister (Pinarayi Vijayan) had written to me assuring me that there will be no interference and now they are proposing that they will appoint Vice-Chancellor. That would mean the erosion of autonomy of educational institutions," he said.
