Understanding DU JAT Normalisation Process
DU JAT scores are arrived after normalising the marks of candidates using equi-percentile method. Read below for more details on DU JAT normalisation of marks.
DU JAT 2022 is expected to be conducted in the first week of August. The entrance exam will be conducted in two slots on a single day. When examinations are conducted in different sessions, the question of maintaining uniformity among the different sets of question papers comes to the fore. To ensure that no candidate is at a disadvantage or benefits from this system, Delhi University has introduced the DU JAT normalisation process to calculate the scores of candidates. Under this process, the candidate’s performance is assessed based on common parameters to arrive at a normalised score. Based on this score, the rank of a candidate is decided In this article, we have simplified the process of DU JAT normalisation:
What is DU JAT normalisation process?
Large number of candidates appear for DU JAT exam conducted in two shifts across several days. The question papers of each shift are different from the other. As such, there are slight differences in the difficulty level of each shift. To ensure that the comparison of marks is fair, the score of candidates are normalized. The normalisation process is followed by the conducting authority where the exam is held in more than one session or dates.
How DU JAT normalisation works?
The marks obtained by candidates in each section - Quantitative Ability, Reasoning and Analytical Ability, General English, Business and General Awareness will be summed up to arrive at the raw scores. The score thus obtained will be normalised using the equi-percentile method.

What is equi-percentile method?
The Equi-percentile equating process is a popular and internationally recognised process of score normalisation in multi-batch examinations. Under this process, the derived and equated percentile marks is compared to finalise the DU JAT 2022 merit list. Equating is a statistical process that is used to adjust for differences in difficulty among exams that are designed to be similar in difficulty and content. Shared below is the formulae to arrive at equi-percentile score:
Equi-percentile score of a Candidate = {[(Total no. of Students in a shift) – (score of the candidate in the shift)] / (Total no. of Students-1)} X 100
The percentile ranks thus arrived by equating the scores of candidates will be used to finalise the merit list.
Factors determining the ranks
The ranks of candidates will be determined based on the following factors –
-
Total number of appeared candidates
-
Difficulty level of examination
- Maximum marks obtained in exam
- Average score obtained by candidates
Tie-Breaking policy for merit ranking
To avoid repetition in the ranks, the tie-breaking policy is undertaken by the examination authority which is as follows –
- Candidates having a higher percentage of marks (aggregate of best four subjects including one language) in Class 12 will be considered first.
- Candidates having higher entrance test scores will be given first preference
- Candidates having a higher percentage of marks (aggregate of best five subjects including one language) in Class 12 will be considered first.
- Candidates older in age (As per Class 10 certificate) will be given preference
Admission to the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Business Administration (Financial Investment Analysis) and BA (Hons) Business Economics programmes in the affiliated colleges of Delhi University is done based on the marks scored in the DU JAT entrance exam.
