NIFT Kolkata B.Des Highlights 2026
NIFT Kolkata BDes programme is available in six specialisations, including Fashion Design, Leather Design, etc. Admission to the BDes course is on the basis of the score obtained in the NIFT entrance exam, which includes two entrance tests: Creative Ability Test (CAT) as well as General Ability Test (GAT). Students who clear both tests are required to appear for the Situation Test for the final selection. Candidate should not exceed 24 (29 years for SC/ ST/ PWD category students) years of age as on August 1 of the admission year. Before appearing for the entrance exam, candidates have to be eligible for the exam:
Eligibility Criteria: Maximum age should be less than 24 years as on 1 August of admission year. 5 years relaxation for candidates from SC, ST, and PwD categories. Applicants must have passed 10+2 examination from any recognised Central or State Board with a minimum of five subjects, or an equivalent qualification. 3 or 4-year diploma holder from AICTE-recognised or a State Board of Technical Education after Class 10 can also apply. Equivalent qualifications such as Senior Secondary School Examination from National Open School, any recognised public school/board/university examination equivalent to 10+2 system, or international qualifications like GCE (A Level) or International Baccalaureate (IB) are also accepted.
Selection Criteria: CAT + GAT + Situation Test.

Joining NIFT Kolkata without entrance exam doesn't seem like a possibility. As per the Institution's admission guidelines, candidates must appear for the The National Institute of Technology (NIFT) exam. The exam is conducted once every year and has TWO parts:
- Written Exams - It comprise the GAT and CAT. The GAT paper is mandatory for all programs, while only BDes and MDes candidates need to take the CAT.
- Situation Test/ Personal Interview - BDes candidates who get shortlisted have to appear in the Situation Test, whereas PG candidates need to appear in a Personal Interview. The only exception is BFTech program, where the admission merit list will be prepared solely based on GAT scores.
As per students reviews, the NIFT Kolkata placements in recent years concluded with 80% students placed. The highest and the lowest package stood at INR 12 LPA and INR 4 LPA. The average package offered was INR 7 LPA.

NIFT Kolkata B.Des Admission Dates 2026
For NIFT Kolkata BDes admission process, online registration will close by mid-January, with a short window immediately after for submission with a late fee. Applicants are also given a brief correction period in the third week of January to edit their application details. Entrance exam is conducted in early February. After this, answer key will be released later in the same month. Admit cards will be issued in March and entrance exam results will also be announced around March to April. Appear for Situation/Studio Test, personal interview, and document verification between April and May. The final result is declared in May, and seat is allocated from May to June.

Number of students in B.Des programme depends on seat allocation within the All-India, state domicile, and NRI categories. In NIFT, across all participating institutes, a total of 5,215 seats are there. To get into NIFT Kolkata, General AI category students need a rank ranging between 162 and 3060 for admission to any of the available courses, namely, BDes course branches, BFTech and MFM.
