Eligible candidates need to appear for the NDA & NA Entrance Exam conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Shortlisted candidates will be called for 5 day Service Selection Board (SSB) interview process based on the rank obtained in NDA & NA Entrance Exam. SSB process consists of two steps: Step I - Screening Test Screening Test is conducted on the first day of the process and it consists of Officer Intelligent Rating Test (OIR) and Picture Perception and Discussion (PPDT) Test in which candidates are tested for general aptitude, reasoning and intelligence Stage II - Only those candidates who qualify at step-I are admitted to the four days long IInd stage/remaining tests. This stage is broadly divided into further 4 categories: 1) Psychological Testing 2) Personal Interview 3) Ground Tasks Officer (GTO) Testing and 4) Conference Round

Candidates recommended on the basis of performance in Service Selection Board (SSB) Interview are then required to appear before a Medical Board for about a week long medical testings. Candidates appearing for SSB interview for the first time for a particular type of Commission i.e. Permanent or Short Service, shall be entitled up to AC III Tier to and fro railway fare or bus fare.

Candidates are selected through merit prepared on the basis of recommendations from SSB and Medical boards.
