B.Tech. in Mining Engineering - Batch of 2026
4.6
It is best college for engineers.
Placements: Percentage of students placed is 30/43 (70) on campus, around 10 in GATE, and rest in further studies. Top recruiting companies are Vedanta, JSW, Chettinad Cement, Ramco Cement, and Aditya Birla Group. Top roles offered are graduate management trainee, analyst, and design engineer. The highest package is 36 LPA. The lowest package is 6 LPA. The average salary is 13 LPA. Internship is only 1, he is our class average student, and not a topper.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure wise NITK is best. It has good hostels. Nice way to live and enjoy student college life. Wi-Fi connectivity is also good and no issues. Moreover, library has nice way to read and makes it a decent learning environment. Quality of hostels and mess is upto the mark and not an issue at all. We all have to just slightly adjust to the taste of the food and not the quality. Good medical facilities are provided. Sports facilities are good. There is a great culture for students to live and enjoy.
Faculty: Professors in mining engineering are highly qualified and have more knowledge in practical terms. Thus they always welcome any kind of event conducting or organizing workshops. Course curriculum is slightly older version and thus needs to be modified. Luckily, the course curriculum is now modified by 2025. Semester exams are not that difficult, and a week before the exam is sufficient.
Other: NITK was my choice it was my go to college because I loved the place. I belong to the same place and I love the nature around and so it is upto my expectations. Best thing about my course is my friends, well to be precise the most suitable reason would be the home-like department and the professors who support me. Improvement is just that lab should be maintained a little more upto newer generation. Regarding the connectivity, crowd, campus, surroundings, scholarships, and extracurricular activities, I would just say that its awesome.

4.0
It is a good college for learning. The college has a low fee and a very passionate crowd.
Placements: The percentage of students placed in the senior batch is around 80%. The top recruiting companies include Vedanta, JSW, and various government PSUs through the GATE exam. The roles offered are primarily as graduate engineer trainees (GET). They focus on managing mine operations. The highest package offered is 16 lakh per annum, the average package is 9 LPA and the lowest is 5 LPA. The internship offers you get in the mining sector are less than 10%.
Infrastructure: The department is fully equipped with a Wi-Fi facility. There are 4 different labs for the mining core (ventilation lab, rock mechanics lab, and mine design laboratory). The food options are pretty mid so you have to compromise on it. The medical facilities and other sports facilities are present.
Faculty: The academic teachers are good and helpful. All are Ph.D. graduates from IITs. They are knowledgeable. Course curriculum is outdated for mining we had a meet this year the management has planned to change the syllabus in future batches. Semester exams are easy the pass percentage is around 90.
Other: I did not choose the course due to the brand value of NITK. I chose mining because the course should have present-day technology used in the mining sector. There are many events and engi are the main events. The college has good connectivity and can get a scholarship through SSP and NSP portals.

B.Tech. in Mining Engineering - Batch of 2026
4.4
Review of NIT Surathkal - National Institute of Technology.
Placements: Placements in the Mining Engineering department are fairly good. From the 2025 pass-out batch, out of 43, about 21 got placed in the private sector including many in data analyst roles, consultancy, core like JSW, Vedanta, and a few in software development roles. The rest around 10 students have a good score in GATE MN paper and are waiting for the government job call. Few others are interested in pursuing higher studies and an MBA. So on average, around 35 have secured placements out of 43.
Infrastructure: There is no problem with the infrastructure availability including high-speed internet or Wi-Fi, on-to-the-point labs, AC classrooms, and one of South India's largest collections of books and e-books in the library. Related to the hostel and mess facility, we have a decent facility here. The 1st year hostels are triple and double sharing, apart from that its single rooms after on.
Faculty: The mining engineering course curriculum is outdated now, but the quality of professors is top-notch. Everyone here is highly intelligent, and depending upon the interest of students the professor shares his knowledge. Semester exams are not difficult but sometimes it becomes hectic but manageable.
Other: I chose this college due to the combination of sports, NIT tag, and good engineering college. It is near to my home. We have South India's second-largest cultural fest Incident.

Life of an average student at NITK
Placements: In my branch, which is Mining, around 90% of students get placed out of those who registered. In my course, the highest package was 30 LPA, while the average package was 12 LPA. I am not sure about the lowest package, but it may be 7 LPA. For Mining particularly, there is Coal India, Bharat Petroleum, etc. But many students got placed in tech companies based on their skills and CGPA. To sit for tech company interviews, core students must have a CGPA greater than 9. Around 30% of students are going to do internships in top companies like Coal India.
Infrastructure: For 1st-year students, there is a special building called 'CIDS' where all 1st-year classes are held. For Mining, a special building is situated near the main building, and Wi-Fi is available in all the departments 24/7. Labs are well-structured, and the instruments are of good quality. If we talk about the hostel, there are 4 boys' hostels and 2 girls' hostels. The food has an average taste, but you can at least survive by eating it. If you are from the North, you may have some problems at first, but it will be fixed as time goes on. There is also a night canteen where you can order food.
Faculty: Professors are very polite and helpful, especially for 1st-year students who are not yet familiar with everything in college. All professors are well-educated. One has done her Ph.D. from ISC Bangalore, one is from IIT Bombay, one is from NITK, and so many other well-educated professors are here. For 1st-year students, all branches must learn all subjects. For example, I am from Mining, but currently, I am learning Python. If we talk about industry relevance, it is definitely relevant but not 100%. Many old strategies are still used. NITK Maths papers are famous in all NITs. Passing CGPA is 5.
Other: I didn’t choose this course; I chose this college because I am more interested in the tech field. After doing much research, I concluded that NITK’s curriculum is very good for programming. I didn’t choose CSE in a tier 1 or tier 2 college, and I didn’t want to go to a tier 3 college, so I chose NITK’s lower branch. There are two annual events: Engineer and Incident. Other events are also held. The campus does not have too much crowd. The bond between seniors and freshers is very good. Many extra activities are available, like swimming, gym, and sports.

Completely satisfied with the course, crowd is decent too.
Placements: This year, about 70% of the graduating class was placed on campus. The rest went on to higher studies, off-campus placements, or are preparing for the GATE Examination. Top recruiters included Vedanta, Jindal, Well Fargo, and Accenture. Internships were available from the third year.
Infrastructure: Facilities, such as Wi-Fi and LAN, are exceptional, and the classrooms in the mining department are just fine. The food in the mess hall is really good, especially when compared to the food in the first-year mess hall. Although the mess hall serves only vegetarian food, it is very good, even in comparison with non-vegetarian food. For medical facilities, we have the Health Care Center (HCC), and all the sports facilities are well-equipped.
Faculty: The difficulty level of this course is relatively low, but it requires good time management skills. If we procrastinate, we will find ourselves in a lot of trouble, as the course moves at a fast pace. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being easy and 10 being tough, the difficulty level of this course as 2 or 3.
Other: I chose this course because of the hill system in our depth, like the pros help you in every way possible and GATE is always a plus point.

Yes, in off campus, you are allowed to and if you are in Tier 1 colleges then you can, depending upon the placement committee and companies visiting the campus.
