 NIT Sikkim course admissions are entrance-based. For admission to its BTech programme, NIT Sikkim accepts the JEE Main scores, followed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. NIT Sikkim admission to M.Tech and MSc programmes is based on GATE and IIT JAM scores, respectively. After qualifying for the respective entrance exams, interested candidates must apply for the relevant counselling sessions, such as JoSAA, CCMN and CCMT, to gain admission to various courses offered by the institute. 

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) is ranked first in Sikkim and second among the top engineering colleges of eminence in the 2018 Competion Success Review-GHRDC Ranking. Some say SMIT is one of the best engineering colleges in the entire North East.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, founded the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Gangtok, as one of its units. Currently, NIELIT Gangtok provides both UG and PG students with close to 20 short-term and non-formal courses.
