Abacus is an old form of doing calculations. It is an old-fashioned calculator, which is again in trend due to its ability to enhance a student’s mental maths. In other words, the Abacus is an antique form of calculation that enables students to do mental arithmetic at a great speed, thus enabling them to save time. Initially, the students use beads in calculations, but once they are again experts they can perform complex numeric calculations with accuracy.

Abacus can be of great advantage to students in this competitive world. It can help students in doing quick calculations cognitively, thus saving time in competitive exams. Learning Abacus is also considered a good exercise for the growth of the brain, especially the little ones. Mental Maths is also considered a good workout for the brain. The popularity of the Abacus is, however, just not restricted to India. A large number of countries are relying on this technique and including it in their school syllabus for the all-round development of children. Enrolling your children in Abacus programmes, will increase their memory, build their personality and prepare them to achieve a niche in the competitive exams.

Abacus Eligibility Criteria

There are no specific criteria to be fulfilled by a student before joining the Abacus classes. Any student between 4 to 15 years can get admitted to Institutes offering this course. The only point that an aspirant needs to fulfill is that he should be good at counting. Also, it is good if a student starts this course at an early age because the sooner they will start learning, the more speed they will gain in arithmetic calculations.

Abacus Entrance Exams

There are no specified entrance exams for admission to the Abacus course. Any student, who is interested in learning mental maths and good at numbers can go for this course to enhance their addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills.

Different Levels in Abacus

The abacus training levels can change based on the particular programme or curriculum that is being used. On the other hand, an abacus training programme usually consists of multiple levels, each getting harder over time. An overview of the levels can be found here:

Basic Level:

  • Overview of the abacus.
  • Acquiring knowledge about bead placement and values.
  • Simple subtraction and addition.

Intermediate Level:

  • Addition and Subtraction practice.
  • Overview of division and multiplication.
  • Increasing computation accuracy and speed.

Advanced Level:

  • Proficiency with division and multiplication.
  • Multidigital number mental maths that is complex.
  • Introduction to increasingly complex mathematical ideas.

Proficiency Level:

  • Sophisticated mental arithmetic using bigger values.
  • Application of abacus techniques to solve complicated problems.
  • Additional improvement in accuracy and speed.

Expert Level:

  • Competence in all procedures, both sophisticated and fundamental.
  • Advanced abilities to solve problems.

How is Abacus important for Brain Development?

A curriculum or training programme that teaches people how to use an abacus is commonly referred to as an Abacus course. Abacus devices are ancient counting tools that have been utilised for thousands of years in many different cultures all over the world. It is made up of several wires or rods with movable beads on them. Users can execute arithmetic operations by manipulating the beads, which represent different numerical values depending on where they are placed on the rods.

Abacus is important to strengthen the mental power of a student. In this, the learners touch and perform calculations on the beads placed in sticks on a wooden frame. It sharpens their memory and helps them remember complex numbers and calculations. The development of the whole brain is facilitated by abacus training, which enhances the abilities of visualisation and concentration. Furthermore, it inculcates self-confidence and speed among the students.

Benefits of Learning Abacus

Gaining a firm foundation in mathematics, strengthening problem-solving skills, developing strong mental math skills, and improving attention are just a few advantages of learning with an abacus. It activates both hemispheres of the brain, increases confidence in one's ability to solve mathematical problems, and fosters spatial awareness.

Students taking up the Abacus programme will learn:

  • How to do mental calculations with speed and accuracy
  • How to imply shortcuts
  • How to improve listening skills and vision
  • Improve imagination
  • Enhance memory
  • Apply Logics
  • Be Creative
  • Improve Problem-solving skills
  • Solve complex calculations
  • Combination of Numbers
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Subtraction

Abacus Online Learning Platforms

The Abacus programme is usually divided into three levels Basic, Master, and Grand Master. Also, the institutes conduct national and state-level competitions for the students pursuing this course. Usually, the duration for the certification courses can vary from 3 months to 12 months. Abacus course can be pursued from a number of online learning platforms mentioned below:
