NCHMCT JEE 2017 Exam Analysis

NCHMCT JEE exam was conducted today, April 29, 2017. A three hours duration exam, every year NCHMCT JEE was conducted from 10 am to 1 pm. But this year, the exam was held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm across 33 test cities in India.

There were no surprises in NCHMCT JEE 2017 exam. The test pattern was similar to that of past years’ papers. In fact, students went to the extent of saying that about 50%-60% of the questions asked were the same as the ones asked in past 10 years of this hotel management entrance exam. Thus, if any student had practiced the past 10 years’ papers of the exam thoroughly they would be able to perform well in the exam.

Compared to all other sections of the exam, Numerical Ability section was difficult. However, if students had practiced Mathematics questions adequately then they would have been able to solve the questions asked in the exam. The English Comprehensions asked in the exam required students to apply their mind and understand the passage well. Overall, NCHMCT JEE 2017 exam was easy and so the cut-off for admissions is expected to be high.

NCHMCT JEE 2017 Questions asked in Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude Section

Basic Mathematics questions were asked in this section. Most of the questions asked in this section were of Class X level. Some of the topics from which questions were asked include – Time and Work, Work and Wages, Compound Interest, Simple Interest and Partnership.

NCHMCT JEE 2017 Questions asked in Reasoning and Logical Deduction Section

More or less the questions asked in this section were easy. This section comprised of questions which could be solved by applying basic logic. Topics from which questions were asked include Statement and Assumptions, Verbal Reasoning, Series, Blood Relations etc. There were not many questions on Non-Verbal Reasoning.

NCHMCT JEE 2017 Questions asked in General Knowledge & Current Affairs Section

Most of the questions asked in section were on General Knowledge and not on Current Affairs. The spheres from which questions were asked include hospitality industry, personalities, awards, sports, science and technology etc.

There were some questions related to Physics and the Solar System. Some other questions asked in the exam include:

  • Ginger Hotel is part of which hotel group?
  • Starbucks belongs to which company?
  • Who advertises Maggi?

NCHMCT JEE 2017 Questions asked in English Language Section

As expected, this section comprised of questions related to Vocabulary as well as Reading Comprehension. There were a total of five Reading Comprehension passages in NCHMCT JEE 2017 and each passage was followed by 4-5 questions. The questions asked were not direct and aspirants had to read and understand the passage completely to answer them. Vocabulary questions were on Antonyms, Synonyms, Choose the Correct Word, Spot the Errors, Spellings etc.

NCHMCT JEE 2017 Questions asked in Aptitude for Service Sector Section

As always, Aptitude for Service Sector section was the easiest. This section had statement questions wherein situations were given. Since the situations were not uncommon, each of the questions asked could be answered easily. The tricky part of this section has always been the graded marking but if aspirants answer the questions asked by applying a little thought then they can score well. Some of the situations put forth in this section are as mentioned below:

  • If your employee isn’t working well then what will you do?
  • If you are interacting with a consumer how will you deal with him in different situations?
  • If an accident has occurred on the road what would you do?

The marking scheme of NCHMCT JEE 2017 was as expected. Regarding the marking scheme the official information brochure of NCHMCT JEE 2017 informs: “Each correct answer under Numerical Ability & Analytical Aptitude, Reasoning & Logical Deduction, General Knowledge & Current Affairs and English Language components carry one mark. For any wrong answer 0.25 marks will be deducted. Graded mark(s) will be awarded under Aptitude for Service Sector component in the following manner; the most appropriate answer carries 1.00, the next appropriate answer carries 0.75, the next to next appropriate answer carries 0.50 whereas the inappropriate answer shall carry negative mark of 0.25”.

Many students assume this section is easy and skip preparation for it. That is a mistake. Revise hospitality basics, food and beverage service, front office operations, and general etiquette to score well.

You should give at least 10 to 12 full mock tests in the last month. Space them out across four weeks. Always review your mistakes after every mock test.

No. Last month is for revision only. Starting new topics at this stage creates confusion and wastes time. Focus only on topics you have already studied and improve accuracy

You should study 6 to 8 hours daily in last month. Divide time across all sections. Give extra time to your weak areas. Avoid studying more than 9 hours.

Around 4 to 6 months of regular study is enough for NCHMCT JEE preparation. If basics are strong, even 2–3 months focused preparation can work.
