If you’re planning on pursuing your PhD from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), candidates need to firstly follow the IGNOU admission process, starting by meeting the eligibility criteria set. IGNOU offers seats in 12 different disciplines of PhD programmes and two streams of MPhil (Master of Philosophy). The IGNOU admission process is as such that candidates will have to apply online on the official website of IGNOU.
IGNOU’s PhD programmes involve plenty of coursework during the first six months of admission. IGNOU offers students distance programmes and regular programmes as well. Applications are accepted by IGNOU twice a year i.e. January and July respectively and eligible aspirants can apply for admission at IGNOU.

IGNOU PhD Eligibility Criteria
First and foremost, before you can apply online for a programme, you must meet the IGNOU eligibility criteria set. A candidate will not be granted admission if found ineligible at any time of the admission process. The basic eligibility criteria as set by IGNOU are as follows:
- The candidate must have done their postgraduation in the relevant discipline.
- The candidate must have done their postgraduation from a recognized university.
- The candidate must have secured a minimum of 55% in their postgraduation. There is a relaxation of 5% marks for reserved candidates (SC/ST/OBC).
- Candidates who have completed their MPhil (along with course work) or have cleared NET or any other equivalent examination will be exempted from appearing form the IGNOU entrance exam.
How to fill IGNOU application form
Eligible candidates can commence the IGNOU admission process by registering and applying for the programme online on the official website of IGNOU. Students are advised that there is no hard copy of the form and the application can only be filled and submitted online. Candidates can follow the below-mentioned step on how to fill the IGNOU application form:
Step 1: The candidate will have to visit the official website of IGNOU to register and apply online.
Step 2: On visiting the homepage of IGNOU, you will have to search for the link ‘Online Admissions 2020’.
Step 3: On clicking the link, the candidate will be directed to a new page and will have to click on the link ‘Click Here for New Registration’.
Step 4: From there, you will have to fill up all the required details such as personal and academic details.
Step 5: Once all the details are filled, you will have to upload scanned images of your passport-sized photograph and signature. The image should be in JPG/JPEG format and its size should not exceed more than 50KB.
Step 6: After the images have been successfully uploaded, you will then have to proceed to pay the application fee.
Step 7: The candidate will have to pay the application fee via online mode i.e. via Net Banking/Credit Card/Debit Card.
Step 8: Once the payment has been made, you will receive a confirmation mail and an SMS on the registered mobile number.
Step 9: With all the formalities completed, candidates are advised to take a print out of the confirmation page as it will come handy for future purposes.
IGNOU Admit Card
Students who have successfully registered and applied online on the official website of IGNOU will be notified and will have to download the IGNOU admit card. Candidates are advised that the admit card will not be sent via mail/post/courier. You will have to enter your login ID and password in order to download the IGNOU admit card. The hall ticket will be released online on the official website of IGNOU one week prior to the entrance exam.
IGNOU Entrance Test
The main part of the IGNOU admission process is that candidates will have to appear for a written entrance test, which will be followed by an interview. Applicants who are found suitable will be called for the entrance test. Based on the performance in the IGNOU entrance test, candidates will be called for an interview. Candidates who clear the interview as well will be offered admission at the university.
