About Operating System
An operating system is a programme that manages the resources of a computer, mainly the allocation of those resources among other programmes. These resources include the central processing unit (CPU), computer memory, file storage, input/output (I/O) devices, and network connections. The first operating systems were developed in the mid-1950s. At that time, these were small "supervisor programmes". They provide basic I/O operations and keep records of CPU usage for billing.
These supervisor programmes provide multiprogramming capabilities to enable various programmes to run at once. In 1960s, computers acquired more powerful operating systems with the emergence of time-sharing and required a system to manage multiple users sharing CPU time and terminals.
Therefore we can say that operating system is an interface between a computer user and computer hardware. It performs all the basic tasks such as file management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, etc. The software that contains the core components of the operating system is known as the kernel. The main objective of an operating system is to enable applications to interact with the hardware of a computer and to manage a system's hardware and software resources.
