IIM Bangalore PGP 2018-2020 admission policy: WAT-PI given more weight than CAT 2017
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has announced its admission criteria for PGP batch 2018-2020.
CAT 2017 has been granted weightage of 40% while the rest of the parameters sum up to 60%. Stressing on ‘consistently good academic record’, IIMB has allotted 50% of the total weight on academic record. But that’s just the first part of selection process. These parameters are set for initial screening of candidates for subsequent rounds.
In the second phase of admission process, CAT 2017 scores will weigh only 25% while WAT-PI together will weigh 40%. Hence, it is essential for the candidates to not only excel in CAT but also continue the winning streak in Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT).
Here’s an overview of the admission criteria:
IIMB has adopted a two-phase selection process. The first phase process is applied to all eligible candidates who appear for CAT 2017 to shortlist candidates who will be called for personal interview.
The weightage of parameters fixed for first phase are as follows:

In the second phase, the selected candidates will be invited for PI/WAT rounds. In WAT, the candidate will be given a topic to write an essay on, in 30 minutes. In the PI round, the candidate will be analysed on the basis of academic performance, work experience, personal traits, etc. PI and WAT will be evaluated separately.
After the second phase, the parameters on which the candidates will be shortlisted are:
| Parameters |
Weight |
| CAT 2017 |

Key points:
• Candidate selected for phase two, will be required to provide three confidential reference letters from their employers or faculty. This will also be used in the PI evaluation.
• The work experience score will be multiplied by the quality of experience score, as evaluated by the interviewing panel.
• The quality of work experience score will be evaluated on a 5 point scale (0.25 - 0.5 – 1 - 1.5 - 2) by each member of the panel during the interviews. The average quality of work experience score will be multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score and accordingly the work / professional experience component score used in Phase 1 will be revised to arrive at a weighted work experience score.
• Candidates with Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretary certifications are eligible for weight under professional course.
• The work experience score (maximum 8 in the pre-PI stage) will be multiplied by the quality of work experience score on a 5 point scale (0.25 - 0.5 – 1 - 1.5 - 2) as given by interviewers in the PI process in Phase 2 to then arrive at a weighted work experience score.
• Work experience score and the professional course score is considered for selection under a common parameter of work experience – since both provide professional work experience relevant to a management programme.
