CAT is one of the most coveted exams in our country. Below is a quick comparison between CAT 2018 & 2019.

So, one of the most coveted exams, for the students who want to study MBA, is over. Common Admission Test (CAT) has never failed to create the sensation throughout the country by coming up with new surprises every time. After CAT 2019, it is time for a quick comparison with the previous year’s exam. A fair analysis is beneficial as it helps to strategise for next year and better understanding.

Initially let’s discuss the basics in brief. CAT paper comprises of three sections:

  • Quantitative Aptitude (QA),
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) and
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC).

Total of 100 questions is given, each question carrying three marks. There is also negative marking of one for every wrong attempt and no negative marks for non-MCQ questions. The total allotted time is three hours -- one hour for each section. The exam has two slots, slot I & slot II.

We will have a comparative analysis according to sections:

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) - The pattern was same with last year with four passages of five questions and passage of four questions along with 10 VA questions, divided between four-paragraph formations, three odd one out and three-paragraph summaries. However, in comparison to the last year’s exam, the verbal section was slightly tough this year. Last year there was no question from grammar and vocabulary. In CAT 2018, 99 percentile was achieved at around 60 marks. Two passages were the reason behind the difficulty. After a whole gap of three consecutive years, this section gave a good challenge to the candidates.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR): The patter was similar this year with 32 questions - eight sets of four questions each. This section had few questions easier than 2018 exam. So, 99 percentile can be attained at around 46-48 marks. The section was found a bit lucid only because of some straight forward questions.

Quantitative Aptitude (QA): Again for this section also the pattern was unchanged consisting of 34 questions. The level of this section was similar to the last year rather comparatively easier. It can be estimated that 99 percentile can be scored by obtaining around 58-60 marks.

Overall the paper was comparatively less difficult than last year, credit can be given to DILR & QA sections consisting of some direct- straight forward questions. So, roughly we can say that in CAT 2019 a candidate may score 99 percentile by obtaining 160 marks. The candidates who played smart, by identifying and attempting comparatively straight forward and easy questions are going to bag some good scores.
