Errol D’Souza, the former director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, has been appointed as the vice-chancellor of GITAM Deemed-to-be University. The announcement was made by GITAM president Mathukumilli Sribharat via LinkedIn. D’Souza will officially take on his new role in early February next year.
Strong Alignment with GITAM's Vision
In his remarks about D’Souza’s appointment, Sribharat highlighted the professor’s alignment with GITAM's vision of becoming an exceptional knowledge-driven institution. “In my interactions with Prof. D’Souza, I have been impressed by how closely he aligns with our new vision—GITAM will advance on a culture of honesty and compassion to make a difference to the world,” he stated. The emphasis on values such as honesty and compassion is expected to be instrumental in guiding the university’s future direction.
Academic and Professional Background
D’Souza has an extensive academic background, serving as a professor of economics at IIM Ahmedabad from 2017 to 2023. He earned his MA in economics from the University of Mumbai, where he received a gold medal for first rank, and completed his PhD at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) as a UGC research fellow. His research interests encompass macroeconomics, development finance, and public policy.
Diverse Contributions to Academia and Policy
Throughout his career, D’Souza has held various prestigious positions, including the IFCI chair professor at Mumbai University and India chair professor at Sciences Po, Paris. His roles also extend to being a visiting professor at several esteemed institutions, including Columbia University and the Indian Institute of Advanced Study in Shimla.
He has made significant contributions to various academic committees, including those of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research. His involvement with the Planning Commission of India and the Reserve Bank of India includes serving as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee on monetary policy.
D’Souza is also an active member of the Academic Council at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and sits on advisory boards for several international development organizations.
