AMU was established in Aligarh, UP around 1920. AMU is UGC approved and is A+ NAAC accredited. The university is also a member of AUI. AMU has been ranked tenth by NIRF ranking 2025 under the 'Universities' category.

AMU offers about 300 courses at UG, PG, PhD and diploma levels.
