In classrooms across the world, mathematics has long been treated as a foundational subject — essential, systematic, and universal. But as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes embedded in most of the tools nowadays, a new foundational skill is emerging: prompt engineering — the ability to communicate effectively with AI.

Prompt engineering is more than just typing a question into ChatGPT. It’s the new art of framing tasks, giving context, and guiding an intelligent system toward useful outcomes. In essence, it’s the grammar of a new language — the language we use to speak with machines. So, should we teach this in schools? Absolutely yes

Just as we teach students how to write essays or solve equations, we must also begin to teach them on how to instruct AI to reason, write, code, and even critique. With AI now assisting in everything from research to art, students who know how to guide these tools effectively will have a significant advantage — not just in academics but also in the workplace

It is important to understand that teaching prompt engineering isn’t about replacing traditional literacy rather it is about expanding it. A student who understands how to ask precise, critical, and creative questions from an AI tool is a student who is thinking deeply — exactly the kind of learner we aim to cultivate.

In this way, AI education — especially prompt literacy — mirrors the journey of mathematics education. We start with simple operations (basic prompts), then move to complex problem-solving (multi-step reasoning), and eventually build toward abstract thinking (AI-aided creativity).

Of course, like any powerful tool, prompt engineering comes with both promise and peril. When used sensibly, it can enhance creativity, sharpen thinking, and level up the playing field for learners. But if misused or misunderstood, it can lead to over-reliance on AI, shallow learning, or the uncritical acceptance of machine-generated content. Hence, teaching prompt generation responsibly is indeed essential.

Educators don’t need to become computer scientists to begin with prompt engineering. By integrating simple prompt-based activities into subjects like English, History, or even Science can empower students to become thoughtful users of AI. The future classroom isn’t just digital — it’s conversational. And the question isn’t whether AI should be taught like Maths. The real question is: can we afford not to?
