The difficulty level of JMI entrance exam syllabus depends on the course. the JMI syllabus difficulty level for UG courses is moderate as most of the topics are related to Class 12 topics. Similarly, the PG course syllabus is based on undergraduate syllabus. Students have to focus more on Current Affairs, as it is neither in Class 12 nor in UG.

The exam duration is of 1 hour 30 minutes and only multiple choice questions (MCQs) are asked in the exam. The JMI Entrance Exam cutoff marks are the minimum marks required to pass the test. These are published along with the declaration of the results. The cutoff marks vary from programme to programme. The aim of the written test of JMI Entrance Exam for M.A. Mass Communication subject is to test the knowledge and aptitude of the candidate and to ascertain the fact that the applicant is suitable for the course. The question paper of Mass Communication subject is divided into two parts. Part A is based on multiple choice questions and Part B is based on descriptive questions.

In Part A, questions related to national and international political issues/personalities, General Knowledge, Film, Television and other media and Art, Literature and culture are asked. Whereas, the descriptive paper comprises of essay type long answers which reflect the candidates' critical understanding of contemporary issues and the media. This paper also evaluates candidates' skill in visualization, story-telling and their creative aptitude. Candidates qualifying the written examination and shortlistted for interview will be required to send e-portfolios.

The syllabus of entrance exams like JMI, CUET UG, and others for BA Hons History course revolves around the Current Affairs, Social Science, World History, Indian History, General Knowledge and General Sciences. The braoad division of the questions for the examination is given below: Indian History: 50% World History: 10% Current Affairs: 10% General Knowledge: 10% General Sciences: 10% Social Science: 10% (Other than History) 100 Multiple Choice Questions are asked from the topics mentioned above. Jamia Millia Islamia's mass communication courses are taught at AJK MCRC or AJK Mass Communication Research Centre. To apply for these courses, aspirants must take the JMI Entrance Exam. It's a three hour long test. This is followed by an interview round. Candidates also have to showcase their portfolios. It must be noted that only postgraduate mass communication courses are offered at AJK MCRC.
