Founded in 1920, Lucknow University is a public state university. The university offers on-campus and online courses. LU is one of the largest universities in Uttar Pradesh having more than 550 colleges affiliated to it.
The university is spread across 219 acres of land. The second campus of LU is located at Jankipuram while the Badshah Bagh campus remains the main campus. - The idea of building a University in Lucknow was first initiated by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur, who contributed an article to the columns of "The Pioneer'' urging the foundation of a University in Lucknow.
- The history of the University of Lucknow dates back to 1919 when a General Committee of educationists met at a conference at Government House, Lucknow, and proposed a scheme for the new university on 10 November 1919.
- It was decided that the University of Lucknow would be a kind of Unitary, Teaching, and Residential University recommended by the Calcutta University Mission, 1919, and should consist of the Faculties of Arts, including Oriental Studies, Science, Medicine, Law, etc.
- By the end of the conference, it was declared that the Rajas of Mahmudabad and Jahangirabad would be responsible for making donations of INR 1 Lakh.
- Eventually, The King George's Medical College (King George's Medical University), The Canning College, and The Isabella Thoburn College provided structural, educational and administrative help for the establishment of the university.

Lucknow University conducts counselling for BTech admission in an offline mode. It is conducted at or on the campus of Janakipuram, University of Lucknow. As per the latest notification, the university will be conducting counselling from Sep 13 to Sep 17 through which seat allotment will be carried out as per the Choices/Preferences submitted by the candidate.
Lucknow University allotment procsess of hostels are completely merit-based and depend on demand and availability. Lucknow University offers several specialisations in BA courses, and the admission procedure for BA courses and its specialisations is similar. The basic eligibility criteria for admission to BA is candidates must have completed Class 12. Additionally, candidates have secured at least an aggregate of 40%. If aspirants qualify all these basic eligibility criteria then they have to appear for an entrance examination called UGPET.
