"No matter whatever happens, always keep working for your dreams", says Mayur Kate, NIT Warangal

National Institute of Technology - Warangal

Talking about my story, it revolves around a boy who could not secure a higher rank in JEE Main but despite that, he finally managed to get a seat in his dream college and achieve what he desired for.

I completed my 10th from Maharashtra board in 2014. I scored 97.20% in state board exams, eventually making everyone happy and proud of my performance. I got admission in Rajarshi Shahu Junior Science College at Latur, from where I completed my class 12th. It was a government college and also provided competitive exam preparation. I chose the engineering because I was always fond of electronics and computer science.

During my intermediate education, I studied thoroughly and also prepared for competitive exams like JEE Main and MHCET. The period of intermediate education passed very quickly, and finally, the date of application for JEE had arrived. The very first mistake I did was making a choice to appear for JEE examination in online mode. I had taken this decision entirely by myself thinking that I will get an extra week to study and will get one offline mode JEE paper to solve (the online exam was a week later the offline one).

My friends and family freaked out listening to my decision and this eventually scared me. I even got sick during the examination period due to fear and anxiety. Finally, the day arrived; 9 April 2016 and my center for JEE Main was in Pune. Somehow I wrote the exam and as to what I feared, it didn’t went well.

Few days later, JEE Main result were announced. I scored very less - only 146 out of total 360 marks. I had never that disheartened before. My parents were too disappointed since they were expecting a good score from me; even I had the same expectations. I was disheartened to an extent that I didn’t prepare for JEE Advanced and ended up getting no rank. Even in 12th Maharashtra board, I had scored only 87.38%, so considering both, my AIR was 17041.

When the date for option form filling arrived and that time, I had decided that this time I must not make mistake. I wanted a good NIT or IIIT, and so I studied about the opening and closing ranks of all branches in NITs and IIITs. I used college predictors, and during this phase, Shiksha.com really helped me a lot. While I was collecting information about colleges and deciding the rough college order, I got to know that one can even change the branch at the BTech level after the first year based on the CGPA in NIT Warangal. This gave me a ray of hope, I felt like I could still achieve something in life. I filled the options in the form accordingly and ended up getting the Bio-Technology branch at NITW. But my plan was to change the branch. Though it was risky, I decided to take it because I was getting a good college. My parents were asking me to take admission in the state engineering colleges based on MHCET, but I chose NIT.

I was delighted and full of hopes with my first step into my dream college. Then I isolated myself and studied to my best in the first year. This resulted in getting a decent CGPA based on which I changed my branch to EEE. Currently, I’m in the 3rd year of BTech, doing well in my studies. So, during these experiences, I have learned that “Where there is will, there is a way” and no matter whatever happens, always keep working for your dreams.
