Mystory@Nithash Majumdar: How I chose my course and college
Frankly speaking, the only reason I chose Science stream in Class 11 was to keep up with the trend (it was regarded as respectable stream to choose). I had secured 10 CGPA in Class 10 (CBSE) and 89.6% in Class 12 (CBSE). Moreover being an NTSE scholar acted as the catalyst in this decision making process. It is only after this ‘blessing in disguise’ kind of a decision, I got to know my passion for computers. It obviously doesn’t include copying a file, installing a game, hiding a file, etc. It’s the internal programming that caught my attention. I would often look at a computer and tell my friends, “kya phadoo cheez banaya be aadmi ne” (what a miraculous machine mankind has made). I started reading online about how a computer system works and believe me, the explanation that the internet offers makes you go, ‘Yay, I want to do it’. That’s when I decided to pursue CSE. As far as selecting the college is concerned, it was during the counselling period that I got information about its rankings and placement. Moreover, my parents dug up quite a lot about various other aspects of the college.
How I cracked college admission
In Class 11 and 12, I had Biology as my additional subject (yep, you read it right!) and not Computer Science or IP (it mattered less in the latter half). With minimal preparation (as the main focus was on Board exams) and coaching from a local coaching center, I sat for JEE Mains in 2014 but didn’t get the preferred branch. So, I decided to drop the next year to give it another try. I joined the Aakash Institute in Delhi. There, I got proper resources and help from the faculty to prepare well. I took quite a few entrance exams namely JEE Mains, JEE Advanced and BITSAT. I secured appreciable marks in JEE Mains. Since I had some practice issues, I was unable to qualify for JEE Advanced.
Admission to BIT Mesra was through counselling JEE Mains’ counselling, JoSAA. I had tried in IIIT Hyderabad and DTU too, but I didn’t get the preferred branch in both of them.
All about my college years
My college years have been like a roller coaster ride. The environment at BIT Mesra is fascinating and soothing. The co-ordination between the juniors and the seniors is fabulous in every aspect -- technical, cultural, co-curricular, etc. Most of my time is spent is learning new things from my friends, seniors, juniors through numerous activities. Various fests are organized in my college and I like to take part in all of them. Not to forget our last minute outings which are immensely enjoyable. I like attending all the classes except those which have nothing to do with the branch I have chosen.
Among many of BIT Mesra’s numerous clubs, I am a member of the photography club and the sports and adventure club and trust me, it’s a lot of fun. These club experiences help a lot during the placement sessions too.
If given a chance I would really want to explore the beauty of the world by visiting various places. I developed interest in travelling after joining the photography club. So far, my experience has been awesome and I hope it will be the same for the years to come.
After joining college I realized that marks don’t really matter. It is the knowledge and the experience that determine one’s future. I also learned that if you want to do something be fully dedicated towards it to gain success in it.
