Internship experience is very important from the perspective of placements and sealing good job offers. Yash Singhal shares his valuable internship experience here. He also points out the implications of gaining hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges for a successful career ahead.

Internships can be a life-changing event for any graduate or a post-graduate student because this can be the main point during your placement interviews. If you have a good internship experience in a relevant field then you are most likely to seal a good job offer.

Internships are generally part of the curriculum in professional courses and it is necessary to complete one internship before course completion. Although different courses have different demands, but one internship experience is mandatory in most professional courses.

Internship is usually preferred from a good and reputed firm, but why it is so? No-brainer here, good companies have great work culture that allow you to learn and experience things in free time rather than making you slog throughout a day.

MNCs in general, follow all the rules and regulations and if they seek more work from you, they will pay you compensation accordingly. Beyond good work culture and compensation, reputed firms are also preferred because they use the latest technology to simplify the needs of the consumers and all the other stakeholders. As a beginner, you are also provided support and guidance by the mentor, under whom you intern. This makes your transition from a student to an aspiring professional quite smooth.

As an engineering student, I have also undergone this experience and I’m glad to share it here. I had applied online for internship at Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi (DLW) and was selected subsequently. On the joining day, there was an orientation programme and all the interns were assigned their responsibilities and projects. My project was related to Wire Harnessing in the Locomotive. My mentor asked me just one thing, whether I was interested in certificate or the experience, as this is the case with many students who apply to government organizations for internships. Without wasting any time, I replied, ‘Experience’ and from that point onwards, my internship started. I was able to know so much about all about the units of a locomotive and nearly all their uses, parts, mechanism, etc.

I had to also face several challenges during the course of my internship. DLW is almost on the outskirts of the city and you can’t easily locate any proper accommodation near the workshop. The timings were 9 am to 4:30 pm for the interns and to reach there on time, I had to catch the city bus on or before 8 am regularly. In the office too, there was very less space to relax for even a moment. If you want to know about other things then you need to get the permission sanctioned from the head officer of that department and only then you were allowed to explore other departments. We all know that to gain something, we have to lose something. Therefore, these challenges were nothing as compared to the exposure and hands-on experience I got from that place.

This experienced gained during the internship can be of great use during the placements. In the college, you won’t be able to get the desired hands-on experience and expand your classroom learning, but during internship you will.

In the off-campus drives, internship experience from a reputed firm can be immensely helpful to add weight to your resume and give you edge over the rest of the competition. Hence, internship from a good organization can be the turning point for your career and help you attain your professional goals faster.
