Students’ Speak: Internship gives exposure into the future job role
By: Madhav Sharma
Internship plays an important role when it comes to industry exposure and gathering some hands-on experience with relevant tools and technologies. Madhav Sharma shares the value of pursuing internships from good organizations and ways to hunt for relevant internship opportunities.
Before diving into the benefits of doing internships and their impact on final placements, let’s understand—what does internship mean? During the internship, you will work with a company but not as an employee. The company can be your domain-based company or it can be from another domain. While working with the new organization, you will get hands-on experience with the kind of projects they are dealing with, how do employees work on those projects, what is the work culture in that particular company, etc. So, basically you will have experience in the field and kind of organizations in which you will be going after graduation.
During the internship, you will be treated as an intern rather than a permanent employee. It is also possible that you will be asked to handle some projects which can be either internal or client projects. You will work on those projects and will get hands-on experience on the tools or technologies that you study during your graduation. While you work on those tools and technologies, you would understand their real importance in a professional environment. Internship gives you exposure to your future role. Furthermore, internship plays a key role during your placements.
Almost every course requires students to undertake one or more internships so that they can get experience of how organizations work. If you are from CS (Computer Science) background then you should do an internship in any IT organization where you can get to know about the latest technologies and basic needs of any IT organization. If you are a law student then you should do your internship at any court or apprentice under a lawyer or in any law firm. What I intend to emphasize here is that at least one internship is required in all the courses.
Let’s focus on the projects as well. There can be any type of project depending on the firm or organization where you are doing your internship. Every company has different departments. You will be given the projects according to your department. There may be chances that you will get a department regarding which you don’t have much knowledge and you’ll have to work very hard. This will be beneficial because you will get to know something new that will open further opportunities for you. So whatever project you are given, just deliver your 100 percent and try to learn as much as possible.
If you are doing your internship in IT organization then you will get some projects related to coding or the latest technologies such as RPA (Robotic Process Automation), Data Science, etc. Moreover, you can also undertake some other projects to give you an edge in the placement drives. During placements, the interviewer will ask about your project and if you manage to explain the projects to them, there will be higher chances for your selection to that particular profile.
Off-campus activities and exploration can also help you to find some good placements or internships outside your campus. Many companies will not come to your campus and you need to forward your resume or CV via mail or some other channel and if your resume is shortlisted, you can expect some interviews or tests. Post clearing those tests you will get that job. In short, the process is quite similar to the recruitment process that is already there on your campus, except that the companies will not come to your campus. There are so many sites such as Naukri.com, LinkedIn, etc. where you can search for relevant openings across various organizations and apply according to your preferences and requirements. I hope this article offers some insight into the benefits of interning with good organizations and assist you in finding the right fit for you.
