IGNOU Highlights 2025
Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. IGNOU Distance Education programmes are offered in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) & Online Learning (OL) modes. The university offers more than 200 programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral levels.
IGNOU courses include BSc, BCom, BBA, BCA, BA, MA, MCA, MBA, MCom and others. Indira Gandhi National University is the largest university in the world, run by the Central Government of India. It has also been accredited by the NAAC with Grade 'A++'. IGNOU has students from over 40 countries. At present IGNOU offers over 200+ UG, PG, diploma, certificate and doctoral courses via regular distance and Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The IGNOU admission cycles are conducted twice a year, in January and July. The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO. Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis. In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university. Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed. IGNOU Scholarships 2025
IGNOU scholarships 2025 are offered to students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). The university also provides exemption/ reimbursement facilities time to time as per the rules of the university. Candidates can also apply for government scholarships. Students are also advised to collect the scholarship forms from the Directorate of Social Welfare or the office of the Social Welfare Officer of their State, fill them up and submit them to the Regional Director at the Regional Centre. The scholarship scheme of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People (NCPEDP) for PG programmes is also applicable to this university's students. IGNOU admission is conducted in two cycles, i.e. January and July. While the registrations for the January session generally get over in March, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) admission for the July session opens in June and remains open till Jul-Aug. The admissions are mainly based on the aggregate obtained by candidates in the last qualifying degree. Students who were not able to take admission in the January batch are open for admission in the July batch. Hence, the answer is almost yes.
Candidates must be pass outs of any bachelor’s degree and/or in the master’s degree in Science/ Social Science/ Commerce/ Humanities with at least 50% aggregate or have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology with a specialisation in Science and Mathematics with a minimum of 55% aggregate. In the field of Education, IGNOU offers a B.Ed programme to students who've completed their bachelor's degree in any field. While the minimum duration to pursue B.Ed is two years, the maximum period allowed for completion is five years.
In case a candidate misses the deadline for IGNOU registration, he or she can write mail or contact the admission office for assistance. In case nothing can be done, he or she then needs to register in the next cycle. IGNOU conducts admission in two cycles-January and June. Admission to most of the courses is based on merit of the aspirants in the last qualifying exam. In case of courses such as B.Ed, PhD and PB BSc Nursing, admissions are offered based on entrance exam scores.
IGNOU Infrastructure and Facilities
IGNOU University provides modern amenities with state-of-the-art infrastructure for its students under the Centre for Online Education (CoE). Conference Room: COE IGNOU has a large conference room which is used by all the schools and divisions for workshops, conferences, seminars, training and many more academic and administrative activities. It also has a Public Address System (PAS) for the smooth conduct of the activities and a seating capacity of more than 100 people.
Data Center: IGNOU Data Center houses high-end servers, firewalls, storage and a sophisticated network to house major applications of the centre such as eGyanKosh, web conferencing, webcasting, etc. Some components for supporting infrastructure include UPS, generators and redundant power sources, Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRAC) and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems among others.

IGNOU offers MSc Physics in the distance learning mode, which means that students can complete the theoretical coursework online or through self-study, but they may face challenges in accessing laboratory facilities. IGNOU conducts laboratory sessions in collaboration with partner institutions that offer laboratory facilities. The Indira Gandhi National University evaluates the candidates based on their performance in the term end examinations, assignments, projects/ practicals. IGNOU assignments carry up to 30% weightage in the final exams. Students must submit the assignments before the IGNOU assignment last date as notified by the university, to be eligible for the IGNOU term end examinations.
