What I gained from my college life: Mitisha Santosh Kotecha

I was pretty sure to pursue Law as a career after completing my X standard. Accordingly, I made all the decisions for my further studies. In XI and XII standard I was in MKH Sancheti Public School and Junior College and opted for Commerce. The college is well reputed for its infrastructure and also teaching faculty. The teachers at the college always helped us in our studies so after completing my XI standard I still continued in the same college. I had passed my X standard with first class division and therefore, it was possible for me to take admission in the college. I had scored 89% in my XII standard and had also given some entrance exams. But since I wanted to stay in Nagpur, I chose Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law affiliated to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University as it is the best government college of Law in Nagpur.

I chose Law as it is said to be the field that has high paid jobs. However, I chose Law not only because it has reputed jobs but also because I wanted to fight against the wrongs of the society – human harassment, trafficking of children, violence on less powerful people. And, without any authority I would not be able to do any of these acts and this is the reason I chose Law as my career. Even many of my family members are now into this profession and so this also gave a support to my decision.

How I cracked college admission

I took admission in my college on the basis of my XII standard percentage. I had scored 89% in my XII standard and the cut-off of my college at that time was 75% for students from Commerce background. The college had released three admission lists but I got through the first list. Currently, admission procedure for students who wish to pursue Law in Maharashtra is now not through XII standard percentage but through MHCET Law entrance exam. Students have to crack this exam to get admission in colleges which are located in Maharashtra and according to their scores in the exam and preferences they are placed in different colleges.

I had even given CLAT and for the preparation of the same had also joined coaching classes of Career Launcher. The coaching classes six years ago did not have permanent faculty. I wanted to have admission in Bangalore but my scores were not that good. Then, I even wanted to stay at my hometown so I chose my present college – Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law. I had the option to go to ILS Law College, Pune and Government Law College, Mumbai. The only difference that is there in these colleges is that if any student wants to do a job in a company or a firm their names give him/her a great exposure in future.

My college life

The college conducts various activities for the development of students. The college has made a huge difference in my life and has changed me as a person to a great extent. The credit for all of this goes to the environment of the college. The hours spent at college are always useful and all the time is engaged in some lecture or the other. I was a part of the Legal Knowledge club of college for two consecutive years. All subjects are good but the teacher of Political Science is amazing so I like to attend his class. I am now promoted in IV year and so till now I like subjects such as Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, and Company Law. The college has made me more confident, bold, and friendly. The time spent in college is utilised to its fullest by discussing and sharing each other’s opinion on various current affairs and interacting with teachers, seniors and classmates.

I usually take part in all the activities which the college conducts. I am a part of the college committee and also the students’ NSS wing. I take part in research paper writing, debate competitions, seminars, essay writing. I am pursuing Law so I take part in various moot court competitions which are intra-collegiate as well as inter-collegiate. The college also conducts a cultural event every year known as Anugoonj and I join in every year; this time came second in dance competition.

Our college also celebrates every occasion through innovative ideas which encourage students to take part in them like teachers day celebration where students do something for the teachers and surprise them. There are various other competitions like rangoli, mehendi, flower arrangement, and other theme based competitions which are conducted in different events. The students also perform on January 16 and August 15. As it is an institution of Law other activities and events like constitution day are also celebrated. The college also conducts parliamentary debates which are very much useful and knowledgeable. Our college organises free legal aid and on the event of Ambedkar Jayanti conducts exhibition promoting the values and the teaching given by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

If given a chance I would give students facility to undertake various diploma courses along with internship offers. I would also restructure the college and upgrade it for students to attain better knowledge.
