Q. Shiksha.com congratulate you on your grand success in the IAS Exam 2019. How do you feel after the IAS result? What is the difference before and after?

A.

I feel elated and euphoric as my hard work paid off and the dream came true. There is only one difference that I don’t have to study for some time after the result.

Q. Please tell us about your Family Background.

A.

I belong to a town Deoghar in Jharkhand. My father is a proprietor and my mother is a homemaker.

Q. Please tell us about your educational background. Were you a bright student or an average student?

A.

I have done my Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation & Control from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, Delhi. I would say I was an average student.

Q. Please tell us about your professional career and previous selections.

A.

I worked in an MNC for 3 years after my graduation and then quit the job to prepare for civil services. Presently I am in Bihar Finance Service working as Assistant Commissioner of State Tax posted in Jamui Circle.

Q. What motivated you to become an IAS officer?

A.

The kind of challenge and job diversity which IAS officer gets is unparalleled. Also, the job would make it possible to contribute to nation-building.

Q. How did you choose your optional subject?

A.

My optional subject was Psychology. I was interested in the subject, I thought the Civil Service Exam would give me the opportunity to study it.

Q. How did you prepare for IAS prelims and mains?

A.

I studied the basic standard books, newspaper and regular current affairs material. I focused more on giving test and writing answers.

See here: How to prepare current affairs for IAS exam 2020?

Q. What is the importance of IAS main answer writing practice? How did you practice for answer writing?

A.

One can only get evaluated for what is written in the paper and not what one has studied. Thus answer writing is very important. I practised answer writing with my friends, on my own and also by writing test series by coaching.

Q. How did you prepare for IAS Essay paper?

A.

I read the requirement of Essay paper as specified by UPSC in syllabus book. I also read a few blogs of the topper to get the hang of what is needed. In the last two attempts, I used to watch an online class of Essay test series.

See here: IAS Syllabus

Q. How did you prepare the General Studies topics for the IAS main exam?

A.

Through the standard books, newspaper and current affairs.

See here: Most important books for IAS Exam.

Q. How did you prepare the notes for IAS exam?

A.

I made hand written notes and also some on the word file as well.

Q. Which books did you refer for IAS exam?

A.

This is a long list and I am sharing the list as follows.

Modern History – Spectrum (Rajiv Ahir).

Ancient & Medieval History – It is advised that one should read old NCERT. But this part was weak for me. So I used to read Tamil Nadu Board Book and Lucent book of general knowledge.

Art & Culture-I followed Nitin Singhania book on Art & Culture. That’s a very good book in my opinion. But people tend to find it long.

Geography-I studied from Vajiram Notes, Yellow Book, NCERT (11th & 12th), GC Leong & Mrunal videos and made short notes from it and always used to refer it.

For map-watch a video or two of places in the news. Also frequently spend time watching atlas and identifying important places.

Polity-Laxmikant & Current Affairs (Legislation & Policy) & tests. There are important committees (apart from polity also) one must learn them also.  This can be used in mains answer writing also.

Environment & Ecology-Old and New biology NCERT. For E&E current affairs is most important. So one has to read about all national parks, biosphere reserves, sanctuaries, species (especially in India & in News), and several organizations and bodies. One should also take the tests to fill the gap and practice the art of elimination.

Economy-Shriram IAS notes and Mrunal Videos. Newspaper & current Affairs and test. Economic Survey – if not complete then only the summary.

International Relations-Newspaper & Current Affairs material & Test.

Science &Technology-Newspaper & Current Affairs material & Test & general awareness.

Social Issues-Newspaper & Current Affairs material & Test.

Q. How the candidate should make study plan for the IAS exam?

A.

They should have a long vision maybe for a month or two and plan their week or day accordingly.

Q. What mistakes should be avoided in IAS preparation?

A.

One should not be complacent and work hard with dedication and commitment. Focus on revision and solving test and writing answers.

Q. What do you suggest to the future candidates preparing for the IAS exam?

A.

One should remain motivated and give their best. And also enjoy the journey to learn new things, make friends and have good memories of this time irrespective of the result.
