Indian Police Service is one of the three All-India Services. The candidates allocated to this service are called the IPS officers. The recruitment of the IPS officers is done through the Civil Service Exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The candidates are allocated to the Indian Police Service based on their ranks and preference given in the Detailed Application Form (DAF). What is the IPS Full Form?

The full Form of IPS is the Indian Police Service (IPS). It is the only uniform service among the three All-India Services. Created in 1948 through the Act of the then Government. The Cadre controlling authority of IPS is the Ministry of Home. It means that the Ministry of Home will deal with all the service-related issues of IPS.

Q:   What are the minimum marks required to become an IAS?
A:

The candidates should note that there is no minimum marks that can be ascretained for the IAS. The final UPSC merit list is based on the marks secured in the main (written) and personlaity test condcuted at Dholpur House, UPSC. The Commission arrange the candidates in the order of their merit and select top candidates for the Indian Administrative Service if they have opted for it as their first choice. 

The minimum marks for IAS cannot be asertained as the cutoff for each year differs from year to year.

IPS 2023 Exam

UPSC will conduct the Civil Service Exam 2023 on May 28. The application for the exam will start on February 1 and the last date to apply for the IPS 2023 exam will be February 20.  The candidates will be required to qualify for each stage of the Civil Service Exam to get selected for IPS.

Not only passing each stage will suffice, but the candidate will also be required to get a rank under 150 to get selected for the IPS. Besides this, the candidates will be required to be given IPS as their first service preference in the Detailed Application Form (DAF).

IPS Vacancies

The Home Minister announced in the Parliament that because of the Paucity of IPS officers in India, the Government will recruit 200 candidates for the IPS through the Civil Service Examination. The CSE 2022 was the first such exam, which will recruit 200 IPS officers. The candidates can see here the IPS vacancies.

IPS Officer

IPS officer is a person who belongs to the Indian Police Service. The Ministry of Personal allocates the candidates to the service after the declaration of results. After the allotment to the IPS, the Ministry of Home becomes the nodal ministry for the IPS officers.

IPS officer is responsible for the Law and Order of the designated area assigned to him or her.  After some years of service, he is made responsible for the law and order situation of the area assigned to him. The nomenclature of the police hierarchy is different in different states. Some states follow the Constabulary system but in Metropolitan areas, the Commissionerate system is implemented to provide more powers to Police Officers. Accordingly, he is posted as the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police as per the state hierarchy. The candidates can see here the Police Ranks in India.

IPS Salary

The salary of the IPS officer is second only to the IAS officer. The IPS salary is at par with the IAS officer but at a higher level, the pay band is one lower than the IAS officer. The IPS officers are entitled to various allowances which form their salary in hand. The important allowances are 

  • Dearness Allowance
  • House Rent Allowance
  • Travelling Allowance

IPS Ranks

The ranks of the IPS officers depend on the time of service and accumulated seniority of the candidate. The initial posting of the IPS officer is Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy. SP). The IPS officer gets the new posts in two manners. Firstly, through the time-bound promotion or the out-of-turn promotion. Out-of-turn promotion is awarded for the exemplary work done in the position. The following are the posts of IPS officers.

Q: What is the qualification of IPS?

A: There is no specific qualification stipulated for IPS. The recruitment to the IPS is done through the Civil Service Exam where the educational qualification required is a graduate from a recognised university.

Q: What is the duty of an IPS officer?

A: The primary duty of an IPS officer is to main the law and order in the assigned area. There are various other duties assigned to the IPS officers such as security officer to the high dignitaries, and security duties in large public agitations or Cultural events organized at the district level.
