M.Sc. in Biotechnology - Batch of 2017

Our college is very nice to achieve success.
Placements: In our college, M.Sc, M.A, CA and all kinds of courses are available, which charge the fee of about Rs. 30,000 per year. Many alumni of our college are in top-ranked colleges.
Infrastructure: In the mess, good quality breakfast and lunch are served. In the hostel, bubble bed facility is available, and all facilities are very nice. There was a very nice structure for studies. I was a leader in our hostel, and no one from outside will come to the hostel to disturb your study. The hostel is nice for all students, and I will suggest you to stay in it.
Faculty: All the teachers here are highly qualified in their own subject, and they are aware of the students' study and syllabus. They always motivate students, and they all are doing their jobs well. They all are highly talented and smart. They separately teach academically weak students and make them well educated.
Other: I have chosen this course as it is very nice, and it builds my career and provides me with knowledge. Our college provides scholarships to talented students. We will study hard for that, and there is a student union centre also to express our opinions.

JNU is one of the best places to study, even if the financial status of the students is low.
Placements: Approximately 87% of students got placement from last two years. The highest salary package offered was 14 LPA, the lowest salary package offered was 6 LPA and the average salary package offered was 9 LPA. Top recruiting companies are Lifesciences Pvt Ltd, Alkem India Pvt Ltd, Newyork lab Ltd. Top roles offered are professor, researcher, junior scientist, patent manager etc. The highest salary package offered was 14 LPA, the lowest salary package offered was 7 LPA and the average salary package offered was 10 LPA in our course. Nearly 95% of the students get an internship in different pharmaceutical companies and industries like Alkem, Mankind, Patanjali, Dabur etc.
Infrastructure: Our department is occupied entirely by Wi-Fi, library, labs and classrooms. The central government of India is funding the college. It's one of the cheapest institutes of country for M.Tech Biotechnology. The hostel is fantastic. The food available at the mess with a reasonable price and also maintain quality with hygiene. We also have a medical centre on campus.
Faculty: JNU has one of the best teachers in the country. They have in-depth knowledge in their respected field of works. Thee teaching quality is up to mark. The course curriculum is not only relevant, but it's the best curriculum for biotechnology. It makes every single student industry-ready.
Other: I chose this course because I completed my B.Sc in Biotechnology. Biotech let you work as a researcher and scientist. We need some more facilities regarding placement. Many events and fests take place in this college to have some quality time. Our university is a closed campus, so it is good. Extracurricular activities like sports and cultural meets are organised from time to time every year.

The college has lovely campus, excellent faculty members and good infrastructure.
Placements: Most of my seniors in the college are pursuing PhD in prestigious institutions, and some have joined JRF. Some of my seniors are applying for PhD in other countries like US, Germany, UK and Canada. One of my seniors is pursuing PhD. Currently, a placement cell is being established in the department of biotechnology.
Infrastructure: JNU has an amazing campus with free Wi-Fi facility. The campus is completely nature-friendly. It has a beautiful central library which is student friendly and remains open all the time. Labs are very good for science students. The college provides a good environment for sports as well.
Faculty: The college provides world-class faculty members in all the departments. They are very intelligent and friendly. They are well qualified, and most of them are graduate and postgraduate from foreign universities. Their teaching quality is very good. The student to faculty ratio is very good. Students also get industry exposure.
Other: The college organises annual fests and sports. The college provides debt scholarships to the students. The college also has a good environment and connectivity.

Review of JNU - Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Placements: Department of biotechnology does not have any placement cell. Most of the time, students have to go for research even if they do not want. I have seen no one who has secured a job from the campus. The university plays no role in providing internships. It is up to the student to look for the internship. Few students get paid one, and most others get an unpaid internship. The average stipend offered for the paid internship is Rs. 15,000 per month.
Infrastructure: JNU has good infrastructure. It is located in South Delhi and has a sense of calmness. Hostels and academic block are now fully Wi-Fi enabled. Classrooms are average, and the labs are decent. There is an active medical centre inside the campus with a 24x7 ready ambulance. Labs have proper funding and do active research work. The canteen food is good, but the hostel food is not good at all. Hostel rooms are on a sharing basis. In my 2 years, I did not have any problem with the infrastructure.
Faculty: The course curriculum is designed in such a way that it is very useful to get a PhD. However, if you are interested in some other field like masters, then it might not be a great option. Professors are good and have the expertise for their subjects. They all have their labs and proper funding from DST and DBT. Teaching methods include teaching on the whiteboard along with the projector. We went for an industrial visit once to Rishikesh to a factory which was making calcium tablets. It was a good experience. The whole trip was paid for by DST.

My experiences at JNU Biotechnology Department.
Placements: I will be clear on this. JNU have no placement cell that I know of and generally offers no placements to students. It being a research institute inspires students to go for Ph.D. I do not know anyone personally who has got a job straight out of university. Coming to the internship part I had an internship in the US. The professors are really helpful and they gave me a generous recommendation. My other classmates did an internship in India only. Few even decided not to go for the internship. It all depends on you.
Infrastructure: The university has pretty decent infrastructure when compared with other institutes of India. I have been to a couple of colleges abroad and compared to that we need more improvements. When I was in JNU it did not have Wi-Fi in hostels. There was a medical center for students, having an ambulance for emergencies. There is also a sports ground and a swimming pool. The mess food is horrible but canteen food is somewhat decent. The hostel rooms are on sharing basis and I was allocated an old hostel. The rooms were okay. I personally did not have any issue with JNU.
Faculty: The course is relevant and up to date. It has helped me to secure an internship in the US. Most of the professors are helpful and serious towards there job. They are keen to solve your query and mentor you. The teaching methods are digital along with proper textbook approach. The student-faculty ratio is not high and helpful for one to one interaction with the facilities. We did have an industrial visit to the starting of the first year. It was some Polio manufacturing unit in UP. The curriculum is useful and very helpful.

My experiences about Biotechnology from JNU.
Placements: It is a matter of sorry state that a premier institute such as JNU does not care about placing its students. Not only in Biotechnology but leaving Computer Science and Information Technology department every department is suffering from zero placement. The prime reason is that there is no such thing as placement cell in JNU. Coming to the internship part, anyone who is hardworking and studies sincerely here gets an internship. Mostly it is unpaid which again shows the sorry state of our institute.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is good but not as modern as IITs and IISc. There is a big library, one medical center for emergencies, a sports ground which is okay for playing cricket and football. The labs are good. Biotechnology also has a common center instrument facility. The labs remain open for 24 hours. Classes are normal. Nothing too good but also nothing bad. Mess food is okay. Breakfast is the best thing that you would like. Canteen does offer many variety and tasty food. New hostels are good. Older ones need improvement. The rooms are on a shared basis. I faced wettening of the walls and the ceiling in my room.
Faculty: As compared to my Bachelor's teachers, the teachers here are serious towards their job. They impart the best knowledge to the students. Most of them have postdoc from outside India. The teaching methodology used is the traditional way of teaching by book and imparting practical knowledge via practicals. The student to faculty ratio is low and is under 10. Every batch has one industry visit in the starting of the first year. It was a nice experience to visit a manufacturing unit in Mujjafarpur in UP. The unit had a focus on supplying polio vaccines.

Review of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Placements: JNU is a non-engineering university which is mainly known for arts. I don't know if any department in the university which has a placement cell. If the students are interested in the job, they apply on Naukri.com or any other website. No one from my batch, or from the batch of my seniors or juniors got a job directly from the college. The average salary they were offered was around Rs. 25,000-30,000 per month. No company visited our campus for Biotech jobs. Nearly 18 students out of the batch of 27 got internships. Few of them were lucky to get paid for that. Rest works in labs across India. The average salary must have been somewhere around Rs. 10,000.
Infrastructure: JNU has good infrastructure. I believe JNU has one of the best infrastructures that I have seen till now. Hostels were not Wi-Fi enabled at that time, but all the departments were facilitated with Wi-Fi. We had decent classrooms, comfortable chairs, a central library along with small libraries in each department. Most of the labs receive timely funding and the quality of work being carried out is also good. Food that is served in mess is average. Eating outside is somewhat affordable compared to South Delhi. Hostel rooms are on sharing basis and good. It has two study tables, two beds and other basic things. The bathrooms are shared for the whole floor. I did not face any issue with the infrastructure.
Faculty: JNU remains in top 3 colleges for M.Sc. Biotech. Hence, the teachers present in the college are indeed good. They have a strong knowledge base. Mostly, they teach from the books, but few others also prefer research papers. Working on lab assignments related to classroom study is a good way to develop concepts. The student to faculty ratio is nearly 10:1 and is good. We have visited an industry. It was about the preparation and distribution of Polio Vaccine in Northern India. It was a nice and memorable experience.

Review of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Placements: JNU does not have a placement cell. After the completion of the course, you have only two options, either go for PhD or prepare for UPSC. So, think twice before you join the university. The internships are provided only after the end of the first year. You can apply to various institutes either online or by writing the mail directly. The internship can be paid or unpaid depending on the situation and where you get it. As we have no placement cell, we cannot be sure about the packages.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure of the university is good. It is located in South Delhi. The campus environment is calm. Hostels are good, but they are overcrowded which is a problem. Many students do not get the hostel accommodation in the first year. It is on a twin sharing basis. Girls' hostels are much better and newer compared to the boys' hostel. Hostels are Wi-Fi enabled. Rest every other facility is also provided. Classrooms and labs are good as per the expectation. Food provided in the canteen is good. Many canteens remain open till late at night, and they serve Maggi and tea. None of the students has faced any problem regarding the infrastructure.
Faculty: The teachers in our college are profound and friendly. They are very knowledgeable. Their quality of teaching is above average. They use various methods to engage and entice the students. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1 which is an added advantage for students. You can personally approach any teacher and ask for help and suggestions. We had two industrial visits, one was in Mujjafarpur, and the other one was at Rishikesh. Both the visits were worth going. It was a wonderful experience to see how the medicines are manufactured. Thanks to the teaching methods and guidance provided. I was selected for NII for my PhD.
