Madras University admissions are both merit and entrance-based. For admission to courses such as MBA, MCA, BArch, etc., the university accepts scores of entrance exams such as TANCET and NATA. The University of Madras Institute of Distance Education offers a variety of short-term courses in distance learning, including a Diploma programme in 15 specialisations, a PG Diploma programme in seven, and a certificate programme in eight specialisations, to prepare its students for a variety of career options. The one-year diploma programmes are offered on-campus and through the Institute of Distance Education and Stella Maris College. The admission process is the same.
