If a Student fails to have the minimum attendance, the principal shall approve the shortage of attendance up to a maximum limit of 10% after collecting the prescribed fee of INR 250 each for Theory/Practical exams separately. The University of Madras Institute of Distance Education offers a variety of short-term courses in distance learning, including a Diploma programme in 15 specialisations, a PG Diploma programme in seven, and a certificate programme in eight specialisations, to prepare its students for a variety of career options. The PG Diploma programme is offered with specializations in Public Relations, Shipping and Port Management, Computer Science, Import and Export Management, Export finance and documentation, and Hospital management. These specializations help the students to become industry-ready and sit for placements with companies like Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, ICICI Bank, TCS, etc. The eligibility criteria for the PG programme is that candidates must have passed graduation from a recognised board. 

More than 50 PG Diploma courses are available at Madras University, both on-campus and through affiliated colleges. There are three delivery options for the course: full-time, part-time, and online. Madras University offers PG Diploma programs with a one-year study length. This course's admission is merit-based. A candidate must hold a UG Diploma/Bachelors or equivalent degree from this University or from any other university recognised as equivalent thereto in order to be admitted to a PG Diploma programme at the University of Madras.

The one-year diploma programmes are offered on-campus and through the Institute of Distance Education and Stella Maris College. The admission process is the same. Candidates are selected for the course based on merit in the last qualifying exam (UG Diploma OR equivalent examination). It is also necessary that the candidate fulfils the course-specific eligibility criteria. Furthermore, eligible candidates can apply by filling out the online application on the Madras University website (unom.ac.in).

Aspirants shall first check the eligibility criteria for admission to PG Diploma courses and ensure that they fulfil the requirements. For eligibility, a candidate must have a valid UG Diploma/Bachelor or equivalent degree from the University of Madras or from any other university recognised as equivalent thereto. Admission is further merit-based. Hence, the candidate's scores in the last qualifying examination are taken into consideration. During the seat allotment, some other factors considered are the cutoff marks, number of applicants, and category of the candidate.

The university offers nearly 19 PG Diploma courses in distance mode. These courses are facilitated by the Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras. The Distance PG Diploma courses are available in specialisations, including Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Taxation, Finance and Investment, Hospital Management, Police Administration, Accounting and Finance, Functional Arabic, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, and Teaching Methodology in Music.
