PU increases fee for all courses

The Panjab University (PU) senate has rolled back the hike in tuition fee for the academic year 2017-18, and now the hike will be only 10% across the courses for the new students enrolling.

Last year Panjab University hiked its fee by 5%, and this year, an average of 12.5% fee hike was earlier approved by the senate for all the courses offered at the university departments and at the regional centres for the academic year 2017-18. However, according to the latest reports, the fee has been increased by only 10%.

According to the senate, if the annual fee is less than Rs 5,000, the minimum hike should be Rs 500. However, for the existing students the hike will be 5% (that will be a minimum of Rs 500 and maximum of Rs 1,200.)

However, the condition demanded with the new fee structure is that a separate budget will be allotted for the students of economically weaker sections (EWS) of the society wherein they will be provided scholarship and fee waivers.

The rise in the fee will be applicable for the students of the new session. Starting from July, the tuition fee will see an increase ranging between Rs 2,000 to Rs 82,000 – this will depend on the course selection.

The proposed new fee structure for the year 2017-18 is as follows:

Course

Fee (Approx.)

MSc (Microbial biotech)

Rs 45,000

BPharma

Rs 50,000

MA Social work

Rs 35,000

MA Journalism

Rs 30,000

LLM

Rs 25,000

4-year BDS course at Dr HSJID and hospital, PU

Rs 1,50,000

BA/BCom

Rs 10,000

BE Chemical

Rs 90,000

BA/LLB, UILS

Rs 75,000

The students who are already studying in the University, will have to pay the existing fee after allowing an increase of 5% on tuition fee. Considering the financial condition of the varsity, the vice-chancellor of PU, Arun Kumar Grover justified the hike in the fee as nominal.

Concessions

On one hand the fee has been increased, however, on the other hand, numerous fee concession schemes have also been approved by the varsity. This will be applicable for all courses, other than self-financed courses. One of the schemes being:

Students who have cleared their class 12 examination from a government school or government aided school, and have an family income of upto 5 lakh annually are eligible for a concession of upto 50% in the tuition fee.
