Students’ Speak: Top 4 tips to crack JEE Main & Advanced
By: Manish Motwani
JEE Main is all about solving those 120 questions. If you remember the fundamentals and how to solve the problems, you can be a topper.
JEE Main and Advanced require time for preparation. Though one can achieve higher goals in less time with smart preparations, it is a myth that solving more problems will give you a higher feat in the subject and exam. JEE Main is all about solving those 120 questions. If you remember the fundamentals and how to solve the problems, you can be a topper. Hence, I am going to suggest some main points to get higher marks in JEE Main:
- Study syllabus: It is important to 'study the exam' first than to 'study for exams'. Get a hardcopy of JEE Main Syllabus, which you will get easily on the website of JEE. Keep it with you until the exam. Now, you only need to study those subjects as mentioned in the syllabus as for sure, the paper won't come out of it. Hence, don't study anything out of syllabus, it will drain your time. Make a list of topics and start learning theories and solving problems. Preparations should always be 35 per cent theory and 65 per cent problems. This is the best approach to put in preparations that will improve your rankings in tests and eventually in exams.
- Understanding exam structure: Exam consists of three sections i.e Physics, Chemistry and Maths. There are a total of 120 marks. It is highly recommended to study the whole paper first and mark easy questions. The goal is to solve a higher number of problems irrespective of the subject. Your first five minutes of paper reading will save a lot of time at the end of the paper. Before exams, study past 10 years’ papers. The analysis is easily available in 'Arihant Publications' book. Mark the topics and find the trend. The Main paper can be easily predicted based on the trend. But regardless, keep your preparations for the full subject because even one mark can change your ranks drastically.
- Revision approach: The best approach to revise the syllabus is to read it's summary in short points and start solving problems. The main paper will mostly have importance of questions and rarely the theory part. Hence, the first time you study the paper, make short notes of it, mark out important concepts and formulas and based on that start solving questions. Even for revision, use short notes and solve questions. This is a fundamental difference between Board exams and JEE Main entrance that one has to follow.
- Self-evaluation: This is the most important part of your preparation. Hence, if it is done with honesty, the better your results will be. First and foremost, if you are not getting your desired rank in your test series or coaching tests, don't get disheartened. Try to solve the paper in three hours in a restricted environment to give it an exam like feel. Prepare for the test for at least three days because there you have to push your full efforts. Have a good sitting habit. Practise sitting for at least one hour before taking a break. Don't practise questions individually. Practise the questions in bulk and before solving them, don't look at answer sheets. Once done, check the answers. If you think, your marks are not up to expectations, revise the theory again and start solving questions. If you follow the same pattern, you will see a clear improvement in your results.
