Q:   Where can I check the NIMCET exam pattern?
A: 

NIMCET exam pattern will be released online by the authorities. Candidates will be able to check the details of how the examination will be conducted through the NIMCET exam pattern at nimcet.admissions.nic.in. To be prepared for the examination, the candidates are advised to check the exam pattern carefully to know the mode, duration, sections, marking scheme, etc., of NIMCET.

Q:   What is the duration of NIMCET paper?
A: 

As per the official exam pattern, the total duration of NIMCET paper will be 2 hours. No extra time will be provided to the candidates to complete the examination. Therefore, the candidates are advised to practice their time management skills carefully to ensure that they complete the exam within the allotted duration. The total number of questions in NIMCET paper is 120 questions.

Q:   When should I start preparing for NIMCET?
A: 

Ideally, you should start preparing at least six months before the exam date. The NIMCET 2026 exam date has not been announced yet, however, the tentative examination date is around June 2026, making now a perfect time to start preparing for it. NIMCET exam pattern along with the brochure will soon be released on the official website at nimcet.admissions.nic.in.

A: 

Yes. NIMCET is an entirely online test or a computer-based test. The entrance examination will be conducted at various exam centres, where the systems will be prepared for the exam. During the exam, the candidates would need to check the questions on the computer, select the correct answer and submit it. No physical question papers will be prepared for NIMCET.

The NIMCET exam will be of 2 hours duration. The paper is divided into three parts, each allotted a specific time, which must be followed by the candidates.

  • Part 1: Math (70 minutes)
  • Part 2: Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning (30 minutes)
  • Part 3: Computer Awareness & General English (20 minutes)

In case more than one answer is selected for a question, it will be negatively marked.

Q:   What if I mark more than one answer to the NIMCET question?

As per the exam pattern of the NIMCET, and its rules, if a candidate marks more than one answer against a question, it will be negatively marked.

Q:   What are the sections in the NIMCET question paper?
A: 

The NIMCET question paper consists of four sections - Mathematics, Analytical Ability & Logical Reasoning, Computer Awareness and General English. During the exam, the candidates will have to attempt questions from all sections. The total number of questions in the Mathematics section is 50 questions. For Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning, the total number of questions is 40, while for Computer Awareness is 20. Finally, there will be 10 questions for the General English section.

NIMCET 2026 Exam Pattern - Important Points

  • The authorities will conduct the NIMCET 2026 exam online, i.e., as a computer-based test.
  • For every question, four options will be given. The correct option has to be selected and submitted.
  • All sections should be completed within the allotted time.
  • Candidates can use the test booklet for rough work and calculations. No other paper will be allowed for rough work.
  • Since there is a negative marking, candidates are advised not to attempt questions about which they are unsure. 
  • Providing multiple answers to a single question will result in negative marking.

Yes, extra sheets are provided to the NIMCET candidates for rough work or calculations. Keep in mind that you would need to submit those rough sheets at the end of the exam to the invigilators. 

Q:   Is it mandatory to attempt every question of NIMCET?
A: 

No, it is not mandatory to attempt all the questions of the NIMCET. If you are not confident of the answer to the question, then we advise you not to attempt it as there is a penalty for every incorrect answer. Ensure that the answers you are giving are correct and you are confident enough about them.

Q:   Will there be any breaks during the NIMCET exam duration?
A: 

No, there will not be any break during the NIMCET exam. The NIMCET exam will be conducted with a single paper containing 120 MCQs, and the different segments of the exam will appear to the candidate one after the other. Time assigned for each part is fixed, so there is no scope for any breaks. The candidate should complete each part in the given time only, as movement from one section to another is not allowed.

Q:   Is calculator allowed in NIMCET exam?
A: 

No, calculator or any other electronic equipment such as mobile phones, pagers, etc. will not be allowed to carry to the NIMCET exam centre. Candidates need to report at the examination hall in the allotted test center with admit card before one hour as NIMCET is an online examination, the candidates are required to follow the instructions given at the test center for entry and allotment of terminal. 

Q:   Will there be papers or sheets provided to do rough work or calculations for NIMCET?
A: 

Yes, papers will be provided to the NIMCET candidates for doing rough work or calculations. Candidates have to submit the same at the end of the exam to the invigilators. The authorities released the NIMCET exam pattern along with the brochure on the official website. With the help of the exam pattern, candidates will be able to check details on the pattern in which the NIMCET paper is structured and also the marking scheme. It is advised for the candidates to check the exam pattern and strategize accordingly for the preparation of the NIMCET exam.

Q:   Will there be any partial marking in NIMCET on the basis of the steps taken to derive the answer, even if the final answer is wrong?
A: 

No, there is no step marking in NIMCET. Each correctly answered question will be awarded full marks and each wrongly answered question will lead to 25% negative mark. The candidates are advised not to attempt such questions if they are not sure of the correct answer. No deduction from the total score will, however, be made if a question is unanswered. More than one answer indicated against a question will be negatively marked. The candidates have to mark the responses as per the instructions appearing in the screen of NIMCET online examination.

The NIMCET is conducted by an individual NIT on a rotational basis every year. So the NIT that is conducting the NIMCET in that year will release the NIMCET answer key. In 2025, the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli conducted the NIMCET and hence, released the answer key.
