Shubh Mittal topped the CLAT 2019 exam with AIR 8. Know what preparation strategy and study plan he adopted to crack the law entrance exam.
The CLAT topper 2019, Shubh Mittal scored total 172.75/200 marks in the exam. His section-wise scores in the test include 35 in English, 46.25 In Legal Reasoning, 16.5 in Maths, 35 in Logical Reasoning and 40 in General Knowledge.

Shiksha got talking to Shubh in which he spoke in lengths about his prep strategy and study schedule for CLAT, future plans, and more. Read the complete interview below:
Q. Congratulations! Did you expect to be the topper of CLAT 2019?
No, I didn't expect such a good rank but I was sure that I would get into NLSIU Bengaluru after the CLAT answer key was released.
Q. What was your preparation strategy that helped you crack CLAT 2019?
I believe in smart study because CLAT is an aptitude based test and it does not require rote learning. Practice and self-study is the key to success in CLAT.
Q. How did you manage time between board exams and entrance exam prep?
I gave the bulk of my time to CLAT preparation and just studied for the boards in the last 10 days because cracking CLAT was way more important for me. One has to set his/her priorities.
Q. Did you take any coaching for this exam?
Yes, I took coaching for CLAT and bought test series and mocks from various coaching institutes like Legal Edge and CLAT Possible.
Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?
I worked a lot on increasing my reading speed because in CLAT one has to do 200 questions in just 120 minutes so one's reading speed should be good. Apart from this, constant practice and taking atleast 120 CLAT mock tests should be adequate for the preparation.
Q. Which books did you read to prepare for the exam?
According to me, some of the best books for different subjects of CLAT are:
- English: Word Power Made Easy, English Grammar & Composition by Wren & Martin, Objective General English by SP Bakshi
- Logical Reasoning: Analytical Reasoning by MK Pandey
- GK: GKToday (website), The Hindu (newspaper)
- Legal Aptitude: CLAT past year papers
- Maths: Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations by RS Agarwal
Q. How did you deal with your strengths and weaknesses while preparing for the exam?
I devoted a lot of time to strengthen my weak subjects like English and Critical Reasoning. But simultaneously I also practiced my strong subjects – Maths, Logical Reasoning and Legal Reasoning because someone had aptly said "If you are good at something make it your best".
Q. What other law entrance exams did you take or are planning to take?
Q. Was law always your first preference?
Yes, law was always my first preference because I want to contribute to the society and I think it is the best medium to do it.
Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?
For those who will take the CLAT exam next year, I will advise to do smart learning and study without any kind of pressure. Just believe in yourself and have confidence that you will crack CLAT with flying colours. Revise what you study and I am sure you all will be successful.
