Anshuman Singh cracked the CLAT PG 2019 exam with All India Rank (AIR) 9. Shiksha got talking to Anshuman to know his prep strategy for the CLAT exam.

The CLAT topper 2019 for LLM programme, Anshuman Singh, scored a total of 101.3 out of 149 marks (one question got cancelled). An extremely dedicated student, Anshuman always wanted to pursue law as his career. He has completed his BA LLB (Hons), 2014-19 batch, from Institute of Law, Nirma University, Ahmedabad.

His father is an Add. CJM, Hajipur at Vaishali (Bihar) and mother is a housewife. In his free time, Anshuman likes reading non-fiction books, listening to old songs, watching and playing cricket, and visiting theatres to watch movies.

While talking to Shiksha, Anshuman spoke in lengths about his CLAT preparation strategy, study schedule, future plans and more.

Q. Congratulations! Did you expect to be the topper of CLAT 2019?

A.

No, I didn’t expect to be one of the toppers of CLAT PG 2019, but life is not fun if you do not exceed your own expectations!

Q. Could you tell us your preparation strategy that helped you crack CLAT exam?

A.

After the conclusion of my undergraduate law studies in April, I started preparing for CLAT. I started my preparations on April 24 and got about a month’s time to prepare. As I earned my honors in Constitutional Law, I felt prepared to tackle the questions that covered this particular field. This allowed me time to focus on the study of other subjects. I pored over different bare acts as much as possible so that my grasp on these core acts was strong as well. I made it a point to study cases that pertained to tort law and the law of contracts.

Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?

A.

I followed a set schedule of studying for about 15-16 hours a day, every day of the week.

Q. Which books did you read to prepare for the exam?

A.

I read the following books:

  • Constitutional Law: Constitutional Law of India by JN Pandey & Bare Act
  • Tort Law: The Law of Torts by Ratanlal and Dhirajlal
  • Jurisprudence: Lectures in Jurisprudence by NK Jayakumar
  • Other subjects: Bare Act

Q. How did you deal with your strengths and weaknesses while preparing for the exam?

A.

My strengths are perseverance and determination. I banked upon these two qualities to prepare for CLAT 2019 PG exam. What I recognized as my weakness was losing confidence at some stages. However, my perseverance helped me get over this weakness.

Q. Did you give CLAT UG? If yes, how is CLAT UG different from CLAT PG?

A.

Yes, I took CLAT UG twice, in 2014 and 2015. CLAT PG is different from CLAT UG in terms of syllabus and questions types. There are no general studies or current affairs sections in CLAT PG, unlike in CLAT UG. However, CLAT PG does cover some contemporary affairs. Also, CLAT PG has a subjective component.

Q. Was law always your first preference?

A.

Yes, I always dreamt of pursuing law since I was in the 8th grade.

Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?

A.

Avoid distractions, believe in yourself, and do not take shortcuts. Read the Constitution as much as possible. Keep abreast of all the new legal developments, and keep practicing.

Q. What are your future plans?

A.

I want to join the judicial services and serve the justice delivery system.
