Meet CLAT 2017 Girl Topper Radhika Sarda
CLAT 2017 results were declared on May 29 and Radhika Sarda emerged as the CLAT 2017 topper amongst girls in the national level law entrance exam. Radhika secured 148.5/196 marks to secure AIR 3 in CLAT 2017. A student of Central Academy Jodhpur Cantt, Radhika has completed her Class 12 from Commerce stream and in CBSE Class 12 Board Exam she secured 90.20%.
Even though she initially wanted to pursue BBA or CA because of her family background, Radhika shares that law came into the picture when she attended counselling at Career Launcher, Jaipur.
An avid reader (especially of suspense stories) and badminton player, Radhika wants to join NLSIU, Bangalore. She further shared her preparation strategy and future plans with Shiksha.
Q. Congratulations on your success! Did you expect to be the topper of CLAT?
Thank You! Frankly speaking, I didn't expect to be the topper of CLAT but the result was a dream come true for me. I felt ecstatic on seeing the result. It was like all my hard work paid off.
Q. Tell us about your family background.
I have a joint family of 11 members. My father is a businessman and mother a homemaker. My elder sister is pursuing Engineering and younger sister is preparing for IIT. My family has a long history of business, so stepping out of business and CA zone and deciding for law was a challenge for me.
Q. What is your score in CLAT 2017?
My score is 148.5/196. Section-wise I scored 33 in English, 28.5 in GK, 31.5 in Logical Reasoning, 15.5 in Maths, and 41 in Legal Aptitude.
Q. Whom do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my parents, my family and my teachers at Career Launcher Jaipur. My parents motivated me consistently, my sisters stayed awake with me when I studied at night. My teachers were always there for me when I felt stressed. They organised parties for us to keep our spirits high.
Q. Could you tell us your preparation strategy that helped you crack CLAT exam?
My preparation strategy was – prepare for the basics and higher levels will take the lead. I worked regularly right from August till May. In the beginning it was just 3-4 hours of study which increased to 13-14 hours in the end. I worked hard regularly but towards the end enjoyed a lot also to ease the stress.
English and Maths are my strong points. So I didn't have to work very hard for them. I enhanced my vocabulary by practicing 10 words daily. I used to make mnemonics for it and sheets at coaching helped for other topics of English. Logical Reasoning requires basic logic, so I was good at Logical Reasoning as well. Legal Aptitude requires continuous effort – keep updated with latest cases and learn maxims. GK was really hard for me. I read Indian Express daily, followed sites like Affairs Cloud and GK Today and read magazines like Competition in Focus (CIF).
Q. Did you take any coaching for this exam?
Yes, I enrolled for one year classroom programme at Career launcher, Jaipur. And that helped me a lot.
Q. What study plan did you follow for this exam?
I used to study in two shifts – entire day in coaching and at night in my hostel, so that gave me a change of environment. I devoted around 3 hours daily for GK and Legal aptitude, one hour for Logical Reasoning, and practiced Maths and English on alternate days.
Q. How did you deal with your strengths and your weaknesses while preparing for the exam?
GK was my weakness, so I worked a lot for it. And for areas that were my strengths, I tried to achieve more accuracy. So, it was all balanced.
Q. Did you read any books to prepare for the exam?
I read Competition in Focus (CIF) and Pratiyogita Darpan for GK. Apart from that, I didn't go for any specific book. I depended much more on the web like Wikipedia, websites like Affairs Cloud, GK Today. I also practiced the study material of my coaching and that was more than enough.
Q. What other law entrance exams did you take?
I gave AILET and I got selected in the first list, I got Rank 7 in it and I scored 120 in SET.

Q. Why and how did you think of making a career in law?
My teachers guided me about law and I developed interest in it. That is how I decided for a career in law. I am interested in law because it empowers us to do good for us and our society.
Q. How was the CLAT exam this year?
The CLAT exam this year was much different from previous years. It focused much more on basic concepts rather than tricky questions. English and Logical Reasoning sections were simple, Legal Reasoning was also easy, Maths was easy but lengthy and GK was really hard.

Q. Any tips for students who are planning to take the exam next year?
I would suggest them to work from the beginning but without stress. And I would suggest them not to mug up books but rather focus on being clear with their concepts. Because you may study a lot of books but still face difficulty in solving simple questions.
Q. What are your future plans?
I am not so sure about that. But I am interested in Corporate Law. I will decide what to do in the future when the time comes.
