TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability: Overview
Part A of the TS LAWCET paper tests general awareness in areas such as history, economics and geography. It also tests the ability to apply logical reasoning. So this section has two parts. The first part is general knowledge. The second part is mental ability. Both parts come in one block of questions, and you answer them together in the same paper.
The TS LAWCET exam question paper has 120 objective-type questions to be solved in 90 minutes. Of these, 30 questions come from General Knowledge and Mental Ability. This means one out of every four questions comes from this section. Many students find these questions easier than the legal aptitude questions. That is why this section is a good place to collect safe marks.
Commonly asked questions
The TS LAWCET cutoff is prepared by the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) in coordination with Osmania University, Hyderabad, which conducts the exam.
After the declaration of results, TSCHE analyzes factors like the number of candidates, exam difficulty, seat availability, and category reservations to finalize the cutoff marks and ranks for each participating law college.
These cutoffs are then released officially during the TS LAWCET counselling process for 3-year and 5-year LLB courses.
Candidates planning to appear for the TSLAWCET exam must start their preparation at least 6 months prior.
The time needed to prepare for the TS LAWCET exam depends on your background and study routine, but on average, 3 to 6 months of focused preparation is enough for most candidates.
- If you study 3–4 hours daily, you can complete the syllabus comfortably in about 4 months.
- Students familiar with current affairs and reasoning may need less time, while beginners might take a bit longer.
- Regular mock tests and revision during the last month help improve speed and accuracy.
Consistent study and understanding of the exam pattern are more important than long hours.
TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability Exam Pattern
The TS LAWCET exam pattern tells you how many questions to expect and how many marks you can get. The full paper has three sections. General Knowledge and Mental Ability has 30 questions. Current Affairs has 30 questions. Aptitude for the Study of Law has 60 questions. Each question carries one mark. The table below shows the pattern in a simple way.

You should know a few more facts about the pattern. Each question carries one mark, and there is no negative marking. This means you should never leave a question blank. Even a guess gives you a chance to score. The exam is held in computer-based mode, so you should also practise on a computer before the test.
The table shows that this section carries one fourth of the total marks. Many students ignore it and focus only on legal aptitude. That is a mistake, because 30 marks can change your rank by a large margin. You should give this section regular time every day during your preparation.

TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability Questions
The questions in this section are mostly easy to moderate. In the 2026 three-year LLB paper, the difficulty level of this section was easy to moderate. Topics asked included the Great Depression, the Strait of Malacca, inland lighthouse, food chain, polycythemia, Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy and direct democracy. You can see that the questions come from many subjects. Some are about Telangana and Andhra history, and some are about world geography and science.
Here are a few sample TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability questions to show the style. These are not official questions.
- Who chaired the Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution? Answer: Dr B. R. Ambedkar.
- The Strait of Malacca connects which two water bodies? Answer: The Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) and the South China Sea.
- Find the next number: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ? Answer: 42. The difference grows by 2 each time.

TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability Preparation Tips
A clear plan is the best way to prepare for this section. Start by reading the syllabus fully. Then divide the topics into small parts. Here are some key tips for TS LAWCET preparation of Mental Ability & General Knowledge section.
- Study one subject each day.
- Keep one day in the week only for revision. This simple routine helps you remember facts for a long time.
- Make short notes as you read. Write important dates, names, articles and definitions in one notebook.
- Use simple words and small points. Before the exam, you can revise the whole syllabus from these notes in a few days.
- Notes also help you remember facts better, because writing makes the memory stronger.
- For mental ability, practice is more useful than reading.
- Solve a few reasoning questions every day.
- Start with easy sets and then move to timed sets.
- Learn the common patterns in number series, coding and blood relations. Check your mistakes after every set.
- Most students lose marks in this part because of careless errors and not because of a lack of knowledge. Read a good newspaper every day.
- Reading newspapers and current affairs of the last six months is advised for this section.
- Also take TS LAWCET mock tests every week. Mock tests show your weak areas and train you to manage time.
Aim to finish the 30 questions of this section in about 20 to 25 minutes, so that you keep enough time for the rest of the paper.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in TS LAWCET General Knowledge and Mental Ability Section
Many students make the same mistakes in this section. The first mistake is to treat it as less important than legal aptitude. The second mistake is to study only from one source and never revise. The third mistake is to skip mental ability practice, because the questions look simple. All these mistakes lower the final score. Another common mistake is poor time management.
Some students spend too long on one reasoning question. This hurts the rest of the paper. If a question is taking too long, mark it and move on. Since there is no negative marking, you can come back later and make a smart guess if you still have no answer. Finally, do not try to learn everything in the last week. General knowledge needs slow and steady study. Start early, revise often, and keep your notes short. With a calm mind and a regular routine, you can score very well in this section.
