Commonly asked questions
Q:   What is the CMAT score calculation process?
A:
CMAT scores calculation is a simple process and it is based on the marking scheme. The raw score calculation in CMAT is the sum total of correct/incorrect entries and unanswered questions. To understand the CMAT score calculation, first understand the marking scheme. For each correct answer, 4 marks will be allotted For each incorrect answer 1 mark will be deducted For each unanswered question, 0 marks will be allotted CMAT has five sections and all the sections have 20 questions each. Thus, the total marks of CMAT exam is 400. If a candidate has got 70/100 questions correct, 10 questions incorrect and skipped 5 questions, then their total score will be (70x4-10+5x0) 270/400. After the calculation of CMAT raw score of each test takers, they are converted into percentile for result and all India merit list preparation. On the CMAT result cum scorecard, raw score as well as percentile is mentioned.
Q:   What is a good score in CMAT for admission to top MBA colleges?
A:

Ideally, one would say that 99-100 percentile is good for MBA Admission. However, it is not possible for all candidates to score so high. So, what shall be considered a good score in CMAT. A good CMAT score is basically a score that will get you a seat in your desired college. So, if you desire a Tier 1 college, a good score in CMAT will be 85 percentile and above. If you desire a Tier 2 college, a good score in CMAT will be 70-85 percentile and for a Tier 3 college, less than 70 percentile in CMAT will be good. Now, if you want to understand CMAT. Score in terms of percentile, so that while giving the exam you know how much raw score is needed to get the required percentile for the desired college, you need to know how much CMAT score is equal to percentile. About 340-350 score is equal to 100 percentile in CMAT About 281-340 score is equal to 90-99.99 percentile in CMAT About 201-280 score is equal to 81-89 percentile in CMAT About 171-200 score is equal to 71-80 percentile in CMAT About 140-171 score is equal to 61-70 percentile in CMAT About 116-140 score is equal to 51-60 percentile in CMAT.

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   How to calculate CMAT percentile?
A:
Since CMAT is usually conducted in two shifts, there are chances of the question paper of one shift being slightly tougher or easier in comparison to the question paper of other shift. In order to negate the possibility of any candidate having an advantage or disadvantage due to this, the exam authorities normalise the CMAT scores before percentile calculation. Once that is done, the authorities use the normalised score for percentile score calculation. CMAT percentile is basically a rank of a candidate vs the total number of candidates who appeared in the exam. Given below is the formula for calculating CMAT percentile prescribed by NTA: Formula to Calculate CMAT Percentile: If 10,000 candidates appeared in CMAT and only 1 candidate scored the highest marks (365/400). Since they have scored the highest in exam, their rank will be 1 and CMAT percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99.
Q:   Can I download CMAT answer key after result has been released?
A:

It is unlikely that the CMAT answer key download link will be available even after the result has been released. The NTA may remove old links from the website after the CMAT result announcement. Thus, it is better to download the CMAT answer key on the day it is released and save a copy of the same.

How to Calculate CMAT Score?

CMAT score is calculated on the basis of correct and incorrect attempts made by the candidate. Given below is the process by which CMAT scores are calculated.

  • For each correct answer, 4 marks are awarded.

  • For each incorrect answer -1 mark is deducted.

  • For each unanswered question, no mark is awarded.

  • The total CMAT score is calculated by totaling marks gained or lost in each question.

  • The CMAT scores are then scaled, normalised and converted to percentile.
  • Total score is 400. Candidates who score arounf 360+ get 99.99 percentile.

The all India rank and merit list of CMAT is prepared on the basis of the overall result (score and percentile). In case, the CMAT score of more than one candidate is same, the ranking is done on the basis of sectional scores considered in the following order:

1. Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation

2. Logical Reasoning

3. Language Comprehension

4. General Awareness

5. Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Which are the top colleges for MBA with CMAT score of 65-75 percentile?
A:
Candidates with CMAT score of 65-75 percentile, must not feel bad about their comparatively low score. There are number of good MBA colleges in India which accept CMAT scores in this range for their postgraduate management courses. Some of the college that accept CMAT score of 65-75 percentile include, BIMTECH-Greater Noida, BIT-Mesra, DY Patil School of Management-Pune, DY Patil School of Management-Pune, Calcutta Business School, New Delhi Institute of Management (NDIM) New Delhi, Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME) Chennai, IES Management College And Research Centre, Mumbai, Jaipuria Institute of Management Noida, FIIB Delhi: Fortune Institute of International Business, Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII Ahmedabad), VESIM Mumbai, Durgadevi Saraf Institute of Management Studies, Delhi School of Business, EMPI Business School New Delhi, Jaypee Business School (JBS) Noida, International Institute of Management Studies (IIMS) Pune among others.
Q:   Is there any negative marking in CMAT?
A:

Yes, there is a negative marking in CMAT exam. For each wrong answer, 1 mark will be deducted. For example, if a candidate attempts 18 questions from Logical Reasoning and gets 15 questions correct but 3 questions incorrect. Then the candidate's score for this section will be 15x4-3, i.e. 57. However, no marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.

Thus, candidates must choose only those questions to solve which they are sure of solving accurately. It is anyway not possible to solve all 100 questions, so candidates must weigh their options viz. Strength and weak areas and then choose questions carefully.

If candidates are not sure of answering a question correctly or it is taking too much time, then they should leave that questions and move to next as they also need to keep a tab on the time limit.

How is CMAT Percentile Calculated?

CMAT percentile score is calculated from the scaled score. The raw scores of candidates are normalised from both exam sessions with the help of a formula to ensure no gap in the analysis of every candidate's performance. The CMAT percentile is then calculated on the basis of the rank of a candidate vs the total number of candidates who appeared in the exam. Given below is the formula for calculating CMAT percentile prescribed by NTA:

Formula to Calculate CMAT Percentile:

Percentile P = 100 x Number of candidates appeared in the examination with raw marks equal to or less than the candidate/Total number of candidates appeared

For example, if about 10,000 candidates appeared in CMAT and a candidate scored highest marks (350/400) their rank will be 1 and CMAT percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99

CMAT rank can also be calculated with the below given formula:

10,000 - 1/10,000 x 100 = 99.99.

Take a look at the image below for reference:

Two or more candidates getting the same rank: In case more than one candidates secure same ranking in the CMAT exam, the same rank will be assigned to all of them but will be displayed by sorting their names alphabetically. The CMAT rank of the subsequent candidate will then be extended by the number of additional students having the same rank. Eg: If three students are at 25th Rank then subsequent student will be ranked as 28th.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Are there CMAT accepting colleges in which GD/PI is not conducted?
A:

Yes, there are CMAT accepting colleges which do not conduct GD/PI. The seat allotment is based on counselling process based on CMAT cut off and candidate's choice of college. Most of the Maharashtra MBA colleges such as JBIMS, SIMSREE, PUMBA, Welingkar's, IMT, KJ Somaiya, etc. that participate in MAH CET CAP round, offer admission without GD/PI.

Q:   If I meet CMAT cut offs but not the academic score criteria, will I still be considered for admission?
A:

The academic score criteria of minimum 50% in graduation for General category candidates and minimum 45 % for SC/ST/PwD candidates is a mandatory criteria set by AICTE for all colleges offering technical education including MBA, so it is very unlikely that if you don't have the minimum academic score by meet CMAT cut off, you will still get admission.
